For this question we recruited the services of a scientist that spends a lot of time in the dark. Gord O., does astronomy as a hobby but also knows a lot about chemistry. You may remember him as "The Professor" at the Halloween party. This is what Gord told us.

All glow-in-the-dark objects, including stickers, are made with certain kind of chemicals called phosphors. The molecules of a phosphor take in ultraviolet light, and then give off light that you can see. Some phosphors can give off the light that it has taken in for hours afterward.

These substances are said to be phosphorescent.
