These two questions are related. We asked our "people" scientist Marisa R. to give you an answer. We also got some statistics about China from the CIA Factbook on the InterNet.
The Chinese population is very large. On average there are about 124 people for every square kilometer in China. In Canada we have only 1 person per kilometer. Quite a difference.
To combat the growth of the population, the Chinese government started a birth control program. In cities which are the most populated areas of the country, each married couple is allowed to have only one child. The national average is 1.8 children born to every woman.
