Waumbek

Andy and I left the Conway hostel a little bit before 07:00 and drove through some rain to Jefferson, where we took a fairly rough forest road to the trailhead parking area. We were the only ones here, and we sped along a fairly easy trail all the way to the summit of Mount Starr King. A survey marker and a small cairn marked the viewless summit, but a short way down the trail brough us to a clearing with a bit of a hazy view into the valley. An old chimney stood in this spot, marking what must have been a cabin in some bygone era. We took a short lunch break and then pushed on along the ridge for another kilometer to the summit of Waumbek. This was marked by an impressive three towered cairn in the woods, and not much else to see. After a couple photos, we turned back and had another short break at the cabin site, where the day had now turned sunny. The rest of the descent went quickly, but we stopped for some friendly chatter with a few other small groups that were now coming up. Three and a half hours brought us back to the parking lot and we did the long drive back to Canada.

Easily graded trail all the way to the summit.

Faded survey marker on top of Starr King.

Obligatory toilet paper inside an old fireplace near the summit of Starr King.

A hazy view down into the valley.

Impressive cairn at the summit of Waumbek.

An old well along the trail back down.
