After a breakfast buffet at the AMC Highland Center, we struck out up a steep trail in the fog. The sun kept playing
with us and the fleeting sunbeams giving us hopes of a clear summit. The trail was mostly snow free, with the
occasional remnants of snowspine after we had climbed above 3500'. A nice little bit of scrambling awaited us at the
very top and we sat down to leftover pizza and beer for a little while, hoping that the fog would clear. We met another
couple local guys with which we had a friendly chat, and then we decided to make the traverse over to Webster to see if
there were better views over there. With the exception of a short steep scramble down from the summit of Jackson, the
ridgeline was fairly flat, which when coupled with the tree cover, meant there was a fair amount of snow. Fortunately
the spine was fairly supportive and easily travelled over for the most part. A short climb brought us to the top of
Webster, where the fog had cleared enough to get a few views down into the valley. Another short break and we began
our descent. The snow disappeared pretty quickly, after which it was hiking on lots of rocks and mud. Near the
junction with our ascent trail, we came across a pretty waterfall, so we stopped for some lunch here. A final stop
was made at Bugle Cliff, where we finally got some clear views for the day as the sun had burned off the last of the
fog. We arrived back at the parking area after about five hours of hiking and drove to Littleton where Deb treated us
all to some delicious and well earned ice cream.
