Big Slide via the Brothers

I signed up for this hike with the ACC at the last minute, some work commitments keeping almost keeping me home. Led by Jim Whitteker, we met down in the Adirondacks for supper on Friday evening. Spent the night at Keene Farm hut and then nine of us set out to climb Big Slide via the Brothers. We summitted only a few hours after starting, had lunch in the glorious sunshine on the peak, and then decided to keep going to Yard, and then descend to John's Brook Lodge, and finally back to the Garden where we started. The going got very hot as the afternoon wore on. The black flies also began to become very annoying. Nevertheless it was a great hike with a great bunch of people. We reached John's Brook Lodge and rested for a while in the shade. It was only about a little more than an hour back to the parking lot on easy trail from this point so the group started to spread out. Five of us reached the parking lot ahead of the others. About twenty minutes later, two more arrived. We all rested and chatted and then realized that we were still missing two people. Our leader was one of the missing ones, so we were not too worried at first. Time went on and eventially we began to get more worried, so Ryzard and I decided to go back to see what the problem was. At the same time we set out, two rangers arrived and we chatted with them. After some confusion, we realized that we were going in to rescue the same people. Ryzard continued with the rangers and I stayed at the parking lot. Turns out one person succumbed to heat exhaustion due to inadequate salt intake (she was drinking lots of water over the course of the day). Eventually her and Jim walked out with the aid of the rangers. All and all a good hike except for the ending.

Scrambling up one of the Brothers.

An old rotten ladder helped on one of the steep sections.

Last bit of approach to the summit.

Summit of Big Slide.

View from the top of Big Slide.

Summit of Yard... not much view.
