Madawaska Highlands - Day 2

Sunday, July 31, 2011 - Black Donald Lake to Ompah - 88 km

I slept well, however Katharina did not. I got up about 5:30 and made coffee while filtering water for the day down at the lake. Katharina got up and we cooked up some eggs and hash browns for breakfast. We got on the road after a very relaxed morning at 8:30 and started pedalling west. In about 15 km we reached the Eagles Rest, where we bought some sweets and took a rest on the chairs there. A forelorn looking dog hung out and gave sad looks as he watched us eat. We continued on at a snail's pace, as the day grew hotter and the road got hillier. We stopped for many breaks and then stopped for a long lunch at Buckshot lake at some beach along the east shore. Katharina went for a swim while I watched some girls parading around in bikinis and a kid shooting a CO2 powered hand gun into the water. Finally we left and plodded along. Water was getting low so we stopped at a boat launch on Palmerston lake where we refilled. As I approached the water, I startled a big snake which slithered into the water and swam away. After Ompah we started to look for camping spots. We had not gotten too far today, but it was already past 17:00. After a couple tries we struck a good spot with an old trail into a mature hardwood forest. The mosquitos are mildly annoying but bearable. Cooked up a spaghetti dinner and then hung out in the tent, which was as hot as a sauna, reading our books until nightfall.

It's a long way to Tipperary... good thing we are not going there.
