Aug 5, 2008 - Hobart Lake to Maple Mountain and Return - 8 km paddle, 8 km hike

Sharp 06:00 the cub scout group was waking so I got up and watched the sun rise. made some coffee and sat by the lake writing and reading. Katja got up and we cooked up some pancakes. The cub troop was suprisingly quiet as the packed up camp and left. Hopefully we will have a peaceful evening tonight. After breakfast we cleaned up and then packed some food and other gear to paddle over to Tupper Lake. It took just under an hour, with two beaver dams to be pushed over during the narrow creek journey that we followed. On Tupper lake we looked for the trailhead to climb Maple Mountain. The map does not show the exact location so we just worked our way around the end of the lake until we found the very muddy landing area. We hiked up the trail which started off very muddy, but with several wooden walkways over the worst of it. Then the climbing begain pretty steadily for the next hour or so. The last section was a scramble up the cliff face with a rickety metal ladder to start you off. The view from the top was spectacular. There were also blueberries everywhere so we picked a bunch to eat for breakfast tomorrow. We had a snack of cheese, granola bars, and lots of blueberries at the base of an old fire tower and then began the climb down. We passed several other people on the way down. As we were descending, we could hear the growl of thunder in the distance. The storm still seemed a ways off when we returned to the canoe, so we decided to try to paddle back to camp. As we were navigating the creek again it started raining, then as we arrived back at Hobart Lake the storm hit. We paddled quickly to camp in a light rain and a couple growls of thunder, and then ate lunch on the shore as the pathetic storm dissipated. The rest of the afternoon was spent waiting out the rain in the tent, swimming when it stopped later, and then reading by the water before supper. Dinner was mac and cheese, after which we packed up quickly as a huge storm was approaching. We dove into the tent just as the downpour started and played chess until dark and the rain subsided.
