Introduction

Katharina and I decided to do a four day trip in North Algonquin to celebrate the Canada Day weekend. We were rewarded with spectacular weather, great canoeing, camping, swimming, and of course, beautiful Algonquin scenery.

July 1, 2010 - Cedar Lake to Kabibonoka Lake - 2 portages totalling 3380 m

We got up around 05:00 and had a quick breakfast before packing the car for the drive to Cedar Lake. Five hours later, we had our canoe and set off from the Brent Store on a cool but sunny morning. A gentle West breeze pushed us along as we paddled down to the far east arm of the lake. A nice sandy beach was at the portage so we pulled up the boat and ate our lunch of sandwiches and somewhat gross apples left over from last years stock. The first portage is the longest one of the entire trip at 2.5 km. Even with a heavy food pack we managed to get across in just over an hour. Some difficulty was encountered at about the mid point as the trail went through a swamp. Additionally a couple of downed trees made for some aerial canoe manouvers until we reached Mishimagwa Lake. A difficult rocky put in awarded us a five minute paddle to the next portage which took us in short order to our destination. We paddled another five minutes to the one and only campsite, which was small, but has a nice expanse of rock along the water. The rest of the afternoon was spent lazing in the sun on the rock, trying to keep warm in the stiff cool breeze from across the water. We did celebrate Canada Day with a bit of rye whiskey, enjoyed on our private patio.
