I woke up just after first light. The night was very windy and scattered with bursts of rain. Fortunately the rain
stopped by morning and the wind died down as we were eating our breakfast of potatoes stewed in minestroni soup. We
paddled out onto Philip Lake in dead calm waters and then continued up the Little Madawaska river. 3 portages greeted
us, the first one being a longer 1 mile carry, and the next two being very short. We paddled out onto Hogan Lake. As
we were crossing Parks Bay, it started to rain so we began donning rain gear. A crash of thunder rang out so we
quickly paddled to shore, before finishing the donning of rain clothes. Since we were stopped we decided to eat lunch
while waiting out the storm, however the storm passed with no further rain nor thunder. We paddled on our way and saw
a couple of people fishing from a small motor boat. We also saw a canoe travelling across the lake in the distance.
This has been the first human sitings in almost 48 hours. It was dead calm so we were able to take a direct route
across the widest portion of the lake. Finally, after a couple hours of paddling we reached our friend, the Little
Madawaska again. We paddled through a long swampy area which was a bit of a maze. There were tons of different bird
and duck species which would spring out of the reeds as we passed. Another portage brought us to Lake La Muir. We
paddled across this in a light drizzle with a tiny bit of a tail wind. We stopped along the shore at a campsite for a
snack. It was a little foggy so I took a compass reading to determine our heading. Another 4 km paddle brought us to
the island where we wished to camp. Unfortunately, someone had already taken this site so we went a little further
and found a nice site on a penninsula. I hung out in the tent for a while, dozing, reading, and writing in my journal
while a Robore creature crashed around in the woods. Ate a dinner of Lipton side-kicks mixed with TVP and dehydrated
vegetables... yumm. Kind of like a military field ration, but not too bad after innoculation with tobasco sause. Sat
around the fire and finished the last of the rum. Went to bed shortly after dark as the rain started up again.
