Sonnenfeld Colony Cemetery
Sonnenfeld Colony
In 1906 a small group of Jews
homesteaded here, seeking agricultural
land and religious freedom. More
immigrants followed and a successful
Jewish colony developed.
It was named after Dr. S. Sonnenfeld,
a director of the Jewish Colonization
Association, which originally provided
loans and cultural aid and subsequently
funded further immigration.
Colony population peaked at 227
ca.1929 and a viable community remained
until the early 1960's.
This plaque is dedicated to the memory
of those Jewish pioneers whose
determination and vision tamed a
wilderness.
