Interest Groups

NB Members: Please note that a version of this page with contact information for the convenors is now on the secure members site.

CFUW/Kanata members are invited to join as many Interest Groups as they wish. It's the best deal in town - friendship, education and fun, all free! Whether it be on a journey towards laying down a grand slam at the card table, or enjoying many culinary delights, we hope that you will join us for a good time. All the groups meet at times that do not conflict with the second Wednesday of the month, when the CFUW/Kanata General Meeting is held. Participants (or in some cases their partners) must be CFUW/Kanata members.

Groups are asked to inform the website manager: cfuwkanata.web@gmail.com of any changes to these groups as soon as possible.

The established Interest Groups meet as follows: (Note that some groups meet irregularly, or have not yet settled on their schedule: They include: 'Sporty' Adventures and the matchmaking group: YENTA).

The Groups

'Sporty' Adventures

Sunday afternoons and other times.

Keep fit and have fun trying out various sports. Each member organizes an event (i.e. time, place, carpooling) they would like to do. Possible suggestions include golfing, downhill skiing, walking tours of studios and artists' homes, cross-country skiing on Kanata trails, skating on the Rideau Canal, indoor badminton, beachball volleyball, swimming, curling, tennis, hiking in Gatineau Park, etc. Most events will occur on Sunday afternoons, but this does not prevent events organized during the week. Just keep moving and enjoy yourself with other members!

They enjoy discussing a variety of books from a preselected list. Each group is run separately and they have different lists. Please contact the convener(s) if you wish to have the list.

Beginners and experts are all welcome to play this fascinating game. The hostess may choose to have 3 or 4 tables.

Gourmet International Creative Cuisine
4th Friday 6.30 pm

Meets to become familiar with the culture and foods, along with the new ingredients, from all over the world.

Sometimes one of us may have traveled to one of these countries where one was taken aback by the exquisite food that one would like to try preparing, and sharing the experience with other people who are not afraid of venturing into the unknown. We listen to the music of the selected country as well as learn about some of the traditions. We have been known to sing and dance on this second Friday of the month! The ambiance of the country is reflected in the table setting as well as the decor.

Gourmet Ladies
3rd Monday 7pm

Meet monthly at their member's convenience for an evening of fine dining and socializing. If you enjoy being adventurous with food, this is the group for you!

Due to popularity we have two groups that both meet the third Monday at 7 pm.

History Group
2nd Thursday 9:30 am

Lunch Club
1st Friday 12:30 pm

Members enjoy dining at a different restaurant each month. Different members act as the hostesses each month. They are responsible for choosing the restaurant, contacting the people on the group list either by telephone or by e-mail, and then making a reservation for the number of people attending. New members are always welcome.

Lunch Pot Luck
3rd Friday 12:15pm

This is a very popular, fun gathering each third Friday of the month. Members take turns being hostess and everyone contributes whatever dish they choose to bring. Wine is provided by the non-hostesses that year. The hostess provides the table settings, tea and coffee. There is lots of lively conversation and good spirits. The convener sends an email to a large list of interested members each month and if you want to attend that month you call or email the hostess to set a place for you. Contribute whatever you want, there is no plan and surprisingly it usually works out very well with a lovely selection of appetizers, main courses, salads and desserts. To be included on the monthly email members should contact the convener.

Movie Matinee
1st Tuesday 4:30-5:00 pm

Members enjoy watching movies together for a reasonable price and great camaraderie on the first Tuesday afternoon of the month.

Outings
4th Wednesday 1 pm

Professional Networking Group
last Monday of the month starting Sept.28 evening. Time and place to be determined.

A group for business professionals to work on their networking skills in a fun and comfortable environment. Meetings will allow business women to network with each other and guest speakers will be invited for some meetings.

YENTA

This is a matchmaking social group for single people of all ages. Membership is restricted to CFUW members and people known to and referred by CFUW members. Following referral and screening, members are invited to various ‘meet and greet’ events, such as wine and cheese parties, outings, etc. These will be arranged by interest and age groupings. There is a nominal fee to cover the cost of events, a portion of which will be donated to the CFUW Scholarship Fund.

If you are interested in participating, or know someone you might want to refer, such as a friend or relative (e.g. child, in-law, etc.) please contact the conveners.
