CFUW/Kanata - Calendar of Events

CFUW/Kanata has planned a very interesting year with inspirational guest speakers. Members and the public are welcome to participate in our monthly meetings held at Stonehaven Apartments, 70 Stonehaven Drive, Kanata, ON from 7pm-9pm on the second Wed. of the month. The guest speakers usually speak between 7:30pm-8:30pm including a Q & A segment. CFUW/Kanata hopes you will be entertained, educated and inspired by the variety of topics chosen for our Program.

OPTIMAL SEXUALITY in the MATURE WOMAN

Please join us for an afternoon of fun and discovery as we celebrate International Women’s Day 2010. Clinical psychologist and sex therapist, Dr. Peggy Kleinplatz is our guest speaker. She will lead us towards a deeper understanding of the mature woman and her optimal sexuality. Light refreshments will be served.

Louise Anne Laroche, who is in charge of the Canadian Currency Museum, will be sharing with us the HISTORY OF CURRENCY, which started with the trading of salt, all the way to the new Canadian currency made with polymers to avoid counterfeiters from copying our money. She will be bringing samples of currency over the centuries. She will explain to us how to tell the difference between a fraud Canadian note and a valid bill. Your attendance will give you valuable insight to mankind’s history of trading.

Catriona Sturton, who works for the Imagination Library will be speaking to us under the theme of National Family Literacy Month. Her title is I THINK I CAN, I THINK I CAN. She will be discussing how Dolly Parton started a local fundraiser to purchase books for children and it has now become an international organization helping spread literacy. We should learn a lot about how small efforts can lead to major changes in children’s lives.

The Trudeaus plus nature, environment and street photography. A powerpoint presentation by former Ottawa Citizen, award-winning photographer Rod MacIvor at 9:30 a.m. at St. John’s Church, 325 Sandhill Road. Light breakfast included. Everyone is welcome. Tell family and friends. Tickets $15 from Jill Jones (613 592-8957) and Carole Ingham (613 832-2225) and at general meetings. Proceeds will support CFUW/Kanata.

SUSAN McGOWAN volunteer from Autism Ontario – Ottawa Branch will be discussing UNDERSTANDING AUTISM. Susan McGowan's presentation will focus on the diagnosis, treatment, research and some other autism 'hot topics”. She will convey a better understanding what it feels like to be a young person with autism, to "de-mystify" some of the strange behaviour that people on the spectrum often exhibit, and teach some strategies that any 'typical' person can use to be friendly, inclusive, and get to know the person inside the autism.
 
She will combine her background in theatre with her present life as the parent of a child on the autism spectrum. Sue has immersed herself over the past seven years in autism issues, research and therapy, while participating with her son in ABA/IBI “More than Words”, the DAN approach, RDI, Speech, Occupational Sensory Integration, Hippo and Music Therapy.

Dr. Ken Farr, National Research Council will be presenting an interesting discussion in honour of the United Nations International Year of Forestry. Dr. Farr will address WHAT DOES THE CANADIAN CONTEXT OF FORESTRY MEAN INTERNATIONALLY? His breadth of knowledge about the Canadian forests will inspire us to appreciate our natural resources, our political influence internationally and the potentials for this industry. You should leave this meeting appreciating your daily walks viewing the trees in your neighbourhood.
