A
turn-of-the-last-century boomtown!
Interesting history of a small
but industrious settlement based
on writings of my Great Grandfather, Sam Barter, as well as an 1895
newspaper article.
From seafarers to
landlubbers
The Barters were the
first landowners in Avondale NB and their story, beginning about 1750 in
England, is lengthy but quite fascinating. I am descended from the Barters
on my mother's side (she was the daughter of Jane Barter
Allen-Kellerman, see bio) and my father was born near London,
England. There is now an audio file available of Jane reminiscing about her childhood.
Family stories from
generations past
Sam Barter certainly loved a good
story and his second child, Florence Nightingale (Lees) faithfully
recorded a number of his tales in 1930. To figure out all the family
connections, you'll need to read up on the Barters.
The first story
transcribed here is about a witch in Tennant's Cove, NB sometime during
the years 1816-1820. Another describes
the anquish felt by the husband over the death by drowning in the early
1800's of Abigail Gale -- Florence's Great, Great, Great, Great
Grandmother. The third recounts the
1835 courtship -- including some hanky-panky involving a school teacher!
-- of her Great, Great, Grandfather [James Martin Barter (1809-1898)] and
Mary Ann Mills (1810-1880).

By Samuel G Barter
"While in this book, the author does not attempt to give a complete
history of the Orser
family, he has assembled much material which will be of interest to
all the descendents of Hartland's first
family."
