We didn't always know exactly where we were but we were fascinated by the changing character of our surroundings. As with any city, visual cues will tell residents much about the neighbourhood they are in but as strangers to Venice we were only aware of how different (and, frequently, how beautiful) our surroundings were compared to what we were accustomed to at home.
