In the 1881 Census of England he is listed as 47 years of age as a farmer with 58 acres. He is shown as residing at Cherry Tree Farm, Farnworth. His seven children still live with him and his wife Sarah. Also residing there are his niece, Sarah E. Young, and a farm worker, James Warburton. They are both 18 years of age. His immediate neighbours, in the census, are Thomas and Maria Tonge, at 18 Blindsill Fold.
According to Joan Poole Roland Young had found indications that the Young family had come from Oban Scotland.
In the 1861 census John Young is listed as a dairyman, living at 8 Foundry Street, Bolton.
