Jan Rukr's Planet of the Apes Icarus Papercraft

As a followup to my blog post where I described my build of Jan Rukr's Planet of the Apes Icarus papercraft spaceship, some people have asked on not only where they can get the files, but also how to open then so they can be printed. In response I've created this quick reference page with dowloads and a

Here are different versions of Jan's drawings that can be printed out and then assembled into 3D models. When I say 'different versions' I mean both different looking, as Jan created different coloured and detailed versions of the same template, and also different formats.

I call his first version, the version with the blue sea base and where the Icarus has a gold nose tip and looks pristine (unweathered) Icarus 1. The second version he made, which I call Icarus 2 has a green sea base and looks weathered and scorched from re-entry hiding the gold nose.

Before downloading, I should explain a bit about the different formats and why you may want one version and not the other.

Jan's original files can in password protected RAR archives. RAR files are compressed files like ZIP files. They are still in use today but you NEED the RAR program to open the files. The original password used was "ICARUS" (ALL CAPITALIZED) which he eventually revealed so anyone could open the files. He also eventually released RAR files that did not use the password protection, but were still stored in RAR files.

But the second, non-password protected files also had one more difference. The original files were in BMP format which were common on Microsoft systems and could be opened with the "Paint" program included with Windows. When he created the non-password protected versions, the files Icarus 1 were now in JPG (JPEG) format, which many more graphics programs could open. The BMP file format is an uncompressed format. So when you extract it from the archive (RAR) files, they will take up more space on your computer drives. Even when compressed in RARs, the RAR files are quite big. Now, what I did was create ZIP archives instead of RAR archives. But since I only had BMP versions of Icarus 2, I could not create a ZIP with JPG files for that version. It's all a bit confusing but I hope the table below which includes links for the files to be downloaded shows exactly all the variants available.

One last note. The orignal pages (both BMP and JPG) were both scaled for European "A4" sized pages. Since non-European countries use standardized 8.5 x 11 inch "Letter" sized paper. Depending on which program you use to open either the JPG or BMP files in the archives, you will have to scale down the images when printing, if you cannot get A4 paper. Most program will do that automatically, but check before you print that it is doing it correctly and not 'stretching' the image to fit. As long as the aspect ratio is retained, you can print it and all the parts will fit when you are assembling the model. If you're printer can handle even larger sizes of paper you can build an even bigger model!

Beware the beast Man, for he is the Devil's pawn. Alone among God's primates, he kills for sport or lust or greed. Yea, he will murder his brother to possess his brother's land. Let him not breed in great numbers, for he will make a desert of his home and yours. Shun him; drive him back into his jungle lair, for he is the harbinger of death. -- Sacred Scrolls --
