Public Summary
Key findings
Satisfaction
- For staff, discipline issues are the greatest source of
dissatisfaction.
- Among students, satisfaction with school drops
dramatically by senior high.
Discipline
- Discipline issues in some schools create a negative space
for students and staff, eating up great chunks of time.
- Among schools with positive climates, key strengths
appear to be teamwork and an effective discipline policy,
consistently applied.
Training
- Staff welcome behaviour intervention training as a
discipline tool, but the training seems to make little
difference. It may be that a diversity of approaches,
combined with school-wide support, can improve the impact
of training.
Behaviour
- Abusive language, insults, obscene gestures and physical
attacks happen frequently in some schools, especially at
the junior and senior high levels.
- Conflicts at school happen most between students
themselves and between students and teachers. Fewer
incidents occur between staff members, or involve
parents.
