  [The following table of contents was transcribed from
photocopies of a microfilm of the handwritten Ordinance Book.
Editorial changes, additions, interpretations or comments
are enclosed in brackets "[" and "]".]

  [Regarding the transcribing of illegible and marginally
legible handwriting into print, where there are degrees of
doubt as to the intentions of the writer, I am attempting to 
adhere to the notation format described in Stevens and Burg,
1997, _Editing_Historical_Documents_, (pages 142-144).]

  [Regarding a comparison of variant titles, the
Cleveland Public Library catalogue lists the title of the
work as _The_city _record_ whereas the description of the
contents on the microfilm reel box is _Ordinance_Book_
1836 - 1857. Aside from the "Date Ordinances Page" heading
at the top of each column in the table of contents, no
apparent title for the overall work appears in the work
itself. The heading "Table of Contents" is an editorial
addition, as are the page numbers of the table of contents
"i., ii., iii.," et cetera. Seven additional reels referred 
to in the library catalogue listing apparently contain the 
ordinances from 1857 to 1872.]

  [The "Date" column was uninscribed for all ordinances
passed between March 1836 and April 3, 1839
inclusive. Dates for ordinances with an absent date
listing in the date column of the table of contents, were
obtained from the text of the ordinances.]

  [An Act to Incorporate the City of Cleveland, debatable
as to whether or not it belongs among city ordinances 
(having been "enacted by the General Assembly of the 
State of Ohio"), was not included in the list of ordinance 
titles from which the Table of Contents was transcribed,
however, the text (of "An Act to Incorporate") appears on 
pages one through ten in the text.]

  [For comparison, an unedited version of the first
six lines of page (i.), column one of the list of ordinance
titles (the Table of Contents) is included below over the 
corresponding portion of the edited version. In the
unedited version, note therefore: 

  (a.) the absence of the "Table of Contents" heading and listing, 
 
  (b.) the absence of the "page (no.)...column (no.)" heading, 

  (c.) the absence of information in the "Date" column, 

  (d.) the absence of the "blank page" listings, and 

  (e.) the absence of "An Act to Incorporate".]
