there. My name is Alfons Kuhn. I operate a farm near Quyon, Quebec. I came here in 1980 from Germany. My ancestors are from east Prussia and could be traced back into the 1600's on the same farms. East Prussia was a German enclave located between the Baltic coast, Lithuania and Poland.
Being isolated from mainland Germany and being rural made it somewhat necessary to rely on their own skills and materials to produce whatever they needed on their farms and in their houses.
One of my great grandfathers made violins on his farm. When my grandmother was a girl, and they were bringing a wagonload of grain to the harbor town which was a daytrip away, her job was it to keep on eye out for wolves and one eye on the wooden wagon axles and water them down before they caught on fire.
My father, born in 1913, was wearing clothing as a child that was entirely produced on the farm, from growing the flax (linen), to spinning, weaving and bleaching the fibre and finally making it into clothes. Today this all sounds unbelievable.
My approach in life was always, "use what you got". I'm not sure if this doesn't come from my background.
At this point in life I decided to make furniture in an environmentally sound way and offer it for sale. I made my first table over 30 years ago with borrowed tools. I actually brought this table with me to Canada and still have and use it.
Over the years I have made different furniture projects with an ever increasing number of tools and machines. I like how my ideas take form, changing on the go if I don't like the look and feel of it. Technically there is a learning curve. When I see some of my projects later, I do say to myself "I would not build it like that again". I am just getting better.
I hope my style appeals to you. I also try to make my furniture very practical and convenient, surpassing others. If you have ideas of what you want regarding furniture, I will do custom work.
