  26. Rowling, JK: Joanne Kathleen (JK) Rowling is the author of Harry Potter. Born July 31, 1966 in Chipping (a hospital in Sudbury), she grew up near the countryside. At school, she had various teachers, and the one she disliked particularly was her math teacher. One of her best friends were Ian and Vikki Potter.
Joanne Rowling had a thing for writing ever since she was a child, and her first (story) was called (Rabbit), which is about a rabbit named Rabbit who was sick, and was visited by her friend, a bee called Mrs. Bee, who brought her food. This was written when she was only 6.
Perhaps a major part of Joanne Rowling's success with Harry Potter is her sister, Diana (Di), who is 2 years younger. Ever since their childhood, Joanne Rowling used Di as an audience, and when Joanne Rowling graduated from Exeter University, Di's encouragement and support was invaluable.
The idea of Harry Potter came to her when she was on a train to King's Cross, from a former boyfriend's house. The train broke down for 2-3 hours due to mechanical problems, and while Joanne Rowling sat in her compartment, "Harry just strolled fully-formed into my mind. I can't tell you what triggered it".
Over the next few years, she planned the books, and started writing Philosopher's Stone.
However, being a single mother with a 2 year-old Jessica in a depressing, unheated 1-room apartment was not the enviroment Joanne Rowling wanted for her daughter. So she decided that, everyday, she would push Jessica in her stroller around town until she fell asleep. Then, she would head over to Nicholson's (the owner was her sister's husband), where, for the price of a coffee and water, she could write for a few hours a day in a comfortable enviroment. Years later, she would marvel at how much she got done in such a short period of time.
Philosopher's Stone was finished and ready for publication in early 1997. She first went to the local library and looked for a list of agents. She picked Christopher Little, who sent manuscripts of Philosopher's Stone to the biggest British publishers. They all refused.
Chris, however, thought that the book was too good to be turned down, and finally, a small company called Bloomsbury accepted it. They published 500 copies of Philosopher's Stone, and they were shipped to bookstores.
It was on of the best moments of Joanne Rowling's life, to see her book in a store. But to her surprise, not only was it being sold, it was being sold amazingly fast. Soon, stores were on the line to reorder the books.
Now, the publishers who previously refused Joanne Rowling offered to review her manuscripts. They were astonished, and so they also offered to publish Philosopher's Stone.
The second book, Chamber Of Secrets, was the hardest one to write, says Joanne Rowling. It was originally titled "Half-Blood Prince", but she changed the title at the last minute, because "it had nothing whatsoever to do with the story". This second book chased Philosopher's Stone up the charts to number 1 after it was published in 1998.
Prisoner Of Azkaban followed in 1999. Many agree that this was the best Harry Potter book. Stores were out of stock in a matter of hours, and reviewers were almost fanatic about it.
Goblet Of Fire came out near Christmas 1999. Fans lined up at bookstores for miles just waiting for it to open. When it went on sale promptly at midnight, the doors were unlocked, and it was out of stock in all stores in the first few minutes.
Order Of The Phoenix followed in 2003. The same, if not more, fanfare also came with it.
Now were are waiting for Half-Blood Prince to be published. How well will this book do? Only time will tell.
