By 1945 the speed advantage of the Ar-234 was disappearing to newer piston engined fighters. In addition, it had a lower service ceiling than several allied fighters and was vulnerable to being "bounced". This version is a field modification with defensive guns removed to save weight and with no under-engine bombs. Compatibility issues: - This mod modifies the Ar-234 parent class, removing dive bombing behaviours from all variants. This may effect online compatibility. Features: - The rear guns have been removed (but the persicope remains in place to provide rearward visibility). Bombracks under the engines have been disabled. The effect of removing the Mg151/20s is not noticeable. However, flying with only one bomb on the centerline, instead of three, increases speeds by as much as 70 kph. Replacing SC500s with drop tanks increases speeds by about 40 kph. In configurations which have a light bomb load and the under-engine hardpoints empty the engines won't overheat (allowing higher speed cruising). - In addition to the 250kg bombs, I've added the PC-1600. In real life the stock of PC-1600 was expended by mid-war and the hardpoint on the Ar234 was only rated to 1400kg. However, there was a PC-1400 bomb and I've chosen to include this as a proxy (as it is pleasant to drop). - Ar-234 dive-bombing has ended. The Ar-234 couldn't conduct (steep) dive bombing for structural reasons and because the engines would suffer a compressor surge. In reality pilots were order to limit attacks to moderate dive angles. Il-2 could do with an AI that can bomb using shallow dives (i.e. 15-45 degrees, rather than 85 degree or 0 degree dives). It could also do with making AI bombing accuracy dependent on bombsight type. However, it is best to keep the AI out of verticle dives until a better solution can be found. Credits: Special thanks to Beowolff for guessing how to solve some issues that were plaguing this mod's cockpit. These include details such as the wrong type of gun in the tail-stinger, the inability of the aircraft to strafe, the fact that only two trigger depressions were possible for the bombload and the modelling of the plane with 4000kg bombloads - when in reality it required RATO to carry 3200kg and operational use was limited to 2000kg. Features: - One bomb is released per trigger press, giving the player a lot more control over release pattern (and making the aircraft more useful). Additional new lighter bomb loadouts. - Asymmetric bomb-loads are provided for the larger bombs (as operationally used). Full range of bombs carried by the ETC-2000 bomb racks - see why the SC-2500 wasn't really used! - Low-level attack: The MGFF in the bow was used primarily as an air-to-ground weapon in low threat environments and to suppress flak. One drum (60 rounds) will be retain by the gunner to defend the airplane and two drums (180 rounds) are put under player control for ground attack (machine gun button). - The tail stinger has been moved under player control (cannon button) and 750 rounds have been allocated to the player, while 250 rounds remain under gunner control (for use by AI aircraft). The weapon has been corrected to be an MG17 (instead of an MG15). In real life this weapon was probably operated by the top gunner using a pedal. Its role was to deter enemy fighters from trying to hide between the dorsal and ventral gunners. - Demyansk anyone? Cargo containers can be carried on the ETC-2000 bomb racks. The cargo containers are invisible while on hardpoints (I can correct this, but the orientation & type of the containers requires 3d work). Additionally, agents be dropped through the rear hatch, albiet with fewer gunner positions occupied (Germany developed paratrooper versions with eight or sixteen soldiers and Slovakia dropped up to ten parachutists during training exercises - however, I'm not sure how they all fit) Other notes: - It would also be nice to have a modified 3d model for the cargo containers (so I could make them visible while on the hardpoints) - It would be nice to add a second forward firing MGFF in the gondola. But, this would require new hooks. If you're a 3d modeler - get in touch. - The historicity of some payload combinations and the reduced gunners is open to question. Some weapons like the AB1000 were very rare. The ETC2000 racks could indeed carry the SC2500, but this seems, unwise. Research is welcome. - Both torpedos are still launched simultaneously. This is because the AI will only make one torpedo run. Hopefully the 4.10 patch will solve this. Credits: Thanks to Anto for making available some code that allows tying the display of 3d models to the payload options. It makes other improvements. Compatibility issues: - This mod currently requires a "flyable" mod to be installed, providing cockpits for the aircraft and gunners (tested with the SAS "Dakotas Flyable Cockpits" by Ranwers, with an Li-2 gunner position by Peacelovinghippy). A non-flyable version, or a version that is compatible with other cockpit packs, could easily be produced if anyone wants it. Features: - The fixed forward firing gun has finally been activated. This gives the pilot a ShKAS with 950 rounds for aiming and for use on searchlights! An "Unarmoured Stormovik" AI has been added so that the aircraft will strafe searchlights. It is stunning to watch three Li-2s attack. - Parachute flares from the bay doors! These are on the rocket trigger in mixed payloads and the bomb trigger in the flare only payload. - Some bombs are released individually. - More varied bomb and cargo loads. Other notes: - The AI with mixed bomb and flare loads will release the flares last and at too low an altitude (thinks that they are rockets). - The aircraft could do with some additional hooks for 8x100kg and 16x100kg bombloads. If you're a 3d modeller - get in touch. Credits: Karabas-Barabas unwittingly gave the idea for the "trophy" loadout. I'd looked forward to trying this weird airplane prior to release, but not after. Part of this is the simple implementation of it. As no plane should go unused: I've tried to think up operational variants. I find that this adds a lot of "depth" and plausibility to the aircraft. Features: - Much more varied bombloads for all variants. - 5xMk108 loadouts (as originally planned for the destroyer variant). - 4xMk108 as in the original implementation. - 2xMk108 loadouts (ie. without the wing guns). - 2xMG151/15 + 1xMk103 loadouts (it was common for designers to pair these two weapons, due to similar ballistics). - 2xMk108 or 4xMk108 + Mk103 loadouts (with the Mk103 on a separate trigger) Other notes: - It would be nice if an intermediate explosion GFX could be produced for the 30mm (falling somewhere between the 20mm and 37mm impacts). - This aircraft could do with removal of the wing cannons from the 3d model and a hook being added for the existing Mk-108 gondola/pod. - Armour penetrating round belting would be useful for the Mk103 - Recoil seems high on the MG151/15 Credits: Thanks to Loku for helping to solve a problem with my fighter classes.
