This exploratory 12-day canoe trip began in Whitehorse at Neil
Hartling's house where we picked up the canoes and all of the
gear.
Neil drove us up the Klondike Highway to Stewart Crossing, then
east on Hwy 11 to Mayo.
There we met Ernie and the single-engine Otter of Blacksheep Air.
The canoes were nested so that we only had to make two trips. We
had a tonne of gear including a propane tank. Henry joked that
Ernie's bulk might prevent us from taking off, but the Otter has
a very powerful engine.
We flew into Duo Lakes, a very exciting flight right through the
Wernecke Mountains.
We offloaded and put the canoes back together. Henry and Lana
gave us a briefing, then suggested a hike in the nearby
mountains. James names them Mount Cameron, and Pat referred to
them as such in his later book. We also had the chance to try a
bit of fishing; the lakes were teeming with small lake trout.
