2023 OFO Peterborough Convention : September 21-24, 2023
Day 4: Prince Edward Point
On Sunday morning, we were up early, checked
out and had a quick breakfast before meeting Mike Burrell at the
Best Western at 6:20 am. We were glad to see that the light was
out in Colin and Hildas room next to ours. They needed a
good rest before the drive back to Toronto.
We were the only two birders to meet Mike and his dad, Jim.
We followed his car on a delightful 2 ¼ h morning drive to
Prince Edward Point Bird Observatory. Here we met the only other
participant, young Tabbathah.
The banding was just getting underway when we arrived. There was
a good variety of birds for us to watch on the outside monitor
and to see when the banders brought them out for release. Barbara
held and released a female Indigo Bunting. We also had Nashville,
Magnolia and Bay-breasted Warblers along with Red-eyed Vireo and
six Brown Creepers!
We hiked out to the lighthouse seeing swans and ducks on the bay
along with some Greater Yellowlegs and Killdeers. The main lake
was too rough to see any birds. But on land, we saw Bald Eagle,
Northern Flicker, Eastern Phoebe, Black-throated Green Warbler,
Ruby-crowned Kinglet and others which Mike and his dad could see,
but were too quick for us.
We hiked to Point Traverse, but saw nothing new. We returned to
the banding station and said our goodbyes. We ate our lunch and
watched more banding, then took off for the 3+hour drive home.
We enjoyed the conference and meeting new and old friends.
