2022 OFO Convention Trip: September 21-26
Day 4: Point Pelee - the Tip, Northwest
Beach and DeLaurier Homestead, September 24
The next day, we had another early tram
ride with Pete Read. This time, we remembered our cameras and got
there in time. Right off the tram, we saw a Yellow-billed Cuckoo!
The plover was still at the tip as was a Peregrine Falcon.
Barbara wandered off and discovered the best bird of the morning,
a Rusty Blackbird on the beach.
We took the tram back and drove to
Northwest Beach where the Friends of Point Pelee were selling
drinks and snacks. Yum. Once again, eagles and other raptors were
in good supply. But the forests were quiet. Pete split the group
into two, and Barbara and Bill went their separate ways.
Bills group finally had some good luck along the road,
while Barbaras encountered a bird fallout at the Marsh
Boardwalk. Sightings included Scarlet Tanager, both kinglets,
Magnolia, Bay-breasted and Wilsons Warblers along with
other passerines.
After lunch back at the cars, we drove to DeLaurier Homestead, an
area none of us had birded before. We were impressed with the
boardwalk trail and its many hummingbirds. Other sightings were a
Green Heron, Swainsons Thrush and another Sharp-shinned
Hawk. Along the way, we met Wayne Bullock who had been on our
Jamaica trip in 2019.
That evening, we attended the OFO AGM and
banquet. We enjoyed the fundraising raffles and interesting
speakers.
