Canoe Arctic expedition: Day 9

Bird of the Day
Northern Goshawk
Early morning
We greeted a fine day early in the
morning.
Adventures
After a good explore, we packed our canoes and set out - it
started to rain - 11°C and wet made for a very cool paddle. We
worked hard to get to our campsite, a distance of about 15 miles
/ 9 km. We crossed a large section of open water fighting against
the wind. Bill changed into his rain jacket standing in our
canoe; Pete and Karen went to shore to change; the rest of us
were wet and got very cold. Eventually our route turned and we
had some shelter with more favourable wind.
As soon as we stopped for lunch, everyone changed into drier
clothes.
Karen startled a spruce grouse, so we all got photos of it in a
tree.
We were happy to arrive at our site at 3pm. We would stay here
for two nights. More clothes lines went up as the rain stopped.
We warmed up with a hike before supper.
And Jim got another fire going to keep us warm.
Alex put out an old hunting rifle and some Dene tools found at
this site.
We had a good supper of bannock, minestrone soup, seafood
casserole, and a dessert! Chocolate pudding. Alex did his usual
dishes clean up at the end of the day.
