Canoe Arctic expedition: Day 3
August 29 2014
Bird of the Day
Harris's Sparrow - lifer #2!
Early morning
It was below freezing at night so very cold in morning - but it
was sunny! We got up early to explore and to do some birding
before breakfast.
Adventures
Alex explained about his waterproof boxes and the
kitchen supplies (and toilet paper) he kept in them.
After our oatmeal breakfast, Alex and Mike put the nested canoes
back together - hard work for a few hours.
After lunch, we stood in a circle and listened to Alex's famous
sermon focused on safety, keeping camp and equipment clean, his
bear alarm, satellite phone... (he has his notes in a tiny
notebook in his pocket). Alex's first words were "I have 3
priorities" safety, protect the environment - leave
everything as you find it, have fun
Then we took down our tents and packed our bags and relaxed a bit
while Alex finished the final preparations of the canoes.
At 2pm we were on the water. After a pleasant paddle, about 4
miles, we stopped for a short pit stop at a rocky point. Karen,
Pete and Barbara climbed a steep hill to check out "more
beauty".
We were on the water again for about 3 more miles and arrived at
our sunny sandy beach / new campsite at 4:30. Time for a wash
before supper.
Bannock was welcome at 6.
After supper, we got our tents ready for the night and had a last
walk before tucking in. It was beautiful starry night with soft
vertical wisps of white northern lights. Jim saw a falling star
pass through the Big Dipper.
