Huron Fringe Birding Festival:
May 21-26, 2015
In 2014 Bill learned about the
annual Huron Fringe Birding Festival from Ottawa birders Anne
MacKenzie and Gord Belyea. They highly recommended it. Someone
distributed flyers at the OFO banquet in Ottawa in September,
which further piqued our interest. We attended the OFO convention
with our friends Colin and Hilda, from Kitchener, and together we
decided to go to the Huron Fringe Festival in 2015.
We decided to reserve six days in May 2015 to make the trip from
Ottawa to Port Elgin on Lake Huron, to the festival centre at
MacGregor Point Provincial Park on Lake Huron.
This festival is well planned and run by the Friends of MacGregor
and includes a large variety of day and half day trips throughout
the Ontario Grey-Bruce area, including the Bruce Peninsula. Trips
are led by excellent volunteer guides.
"From our base at MacGregor Point Provincial Park we are uniquely placed to explore Lake Huron's shoreline and the Bruce Peninsula to discover all that spring has to offer." http://friendsofmacgregor.org/page/huron-fringe-birding-festival
We registered online the first day the information was posted in
February. http://friendsofmacgregor.org/page/schedule-of-events
Colin and Hilda, registered too.
At the festval, Bill stood out in his orange
jacket. Hilda was bundled up in navy blue (it was cold by the
shore of Lake Huron). Birders have to be tough!
Colin and Hilda decided to stay at a motel in Port Elgin and we
set up our tent at the MacGregor Point campground, near the
festival headquarters at the Visitor Centre. We spent two days
together birding; as well we attended evening presentations and
enjoyed the Saturday night banquet.
