Huron Fringe Birding Festival 2024
May 23 - Travelling to MacGregor Point Provincial Park
Our route to the festival goes via Bancroft and Orillia. This
avoids most busy roads and allows us to visit the Carden Alvar on
the way. We took Hwy 17 to Renfrew, then Hwy 132, Hwy 41 and on
to Hwy 28.
The outfitter at the Madawaska bridge has bluebird boxes. We
discovered that the black flies were out in force!
At Cardiff, we took Hwy 118 , then stopped for a
break at Tory Hill. Yellow Warblers were singing but remained
hidden..
Then it was on to Carden. There were many
Bluebirds, Kingbirds and Tree Swallows. We met Jean Iron who was
scouting for her upcoming Ontario Field Ornithologists trip. We
saw a few Bobolinks and a Northern Rough-winged Swallow.
We stopped for Ice Cream at Kawartha Dairy in
Orillia and gassed up. We took a different route through
Collingwood, as advised by Google
We eventually arrive at the Super 8 in Port Elgin
and met our friends Colin & Hilda. We went next door to
Wendys and had a simple supper. We tucked in early and set our
alarm for 5:00 am.
We were ready for our festival birding adventures.
