Huron Fringe Birding Festival 2023
May 29 - Homeward Bound
Although we had no scheduled trip, we still got up
early to have breakfast and start taking down our tent.
Unlike the other mornings, bird song was everywhere. Merlin kept
reporting a Canada Warbler, among others. A Green Heron flew over
our site. We could not resist a short walk down the trail beside
our site, where we saw a Blackburnian Warbler and a Canada
Warbler. Wow!
We finished packing and drove to the start of the
Tower Trail parking lot, where we saw another Canada Warbler, a
pair of Great Crested Flycatchers, a Red-eyed Vireo and a
photogenic Common Grackle.
We reluctantly decided to leave, only to meet a
woman on the road listening to a Mourning Warbler. We stopped for
it and got it. Too bad it was backlit.
Finally, we were on our way, stopping when we saw
Cedar Waxwings, a Sandhill Crane with a hairdo and a perched
Red-tailed Hawk.
On our way home, we made several stops, including
the Durham Cemetery, Furnace Falls, and the York River, where we
swatted mosquitoes while photographing an Ovenbird.
We saw a turtle on the road by a watch 4
turtles sign, but it had vanished while we turned around.
Our last bird was another Eastern Bluebird at the Madawaka River
bridge.
The Huron Fringe Festival is truly a marvellous
birding adventure.
