Huron Fringe Birding Festival 2023

May 26 am - Kincardine Lagoons aka "Pelee North" with James Turland

We were up before 5:30 am to get the coffee on. It was near zero degrees, so we wore all our layers. After a quick sticky bun, we headed over to the Visitors’ Centre to meet our leader, James Turland and the rest of the group. James also brought his son Simon to provide young ears and eyes.

We made a brief stop to hear Golden-winged and Blue-winged Warblers, then headed to J & I Sideroad for Clay-colored Sparrows, Purple Finches, and Eastern Meadowlarks.

We drove 30 minutes to Kincardine, where we birded along the edge of the lagoons. Along the sports field, we got Swainson’s Thrush, Gray Catbird, and Philadelphia Vireo.

Along side the lagoons, we had a bonanza; more Swainson’s Thrushes, anIndigo Bunting, 3 Green Herons, Cedar Waxwings, and Eastern Kingbirds. And warblers! Blackpoll, Common Yellowthroat, American Redstart, Chestnut-sided, Black-throated Blue, Blackburnian, Cape May, and Black and White. Also seen were Red-eyed Vireo, Great Crested Flycatcher, Scarlet Tanager, Rose-breasted Grosbeak, Least Flycatcher, and Blue-headed Vireo. Even James was surprised at the amount of activity.

“Pelee North” had lived up to its name. We were especially pleased to get photos of Blackpoll Warblers!
