Huron Fringe Birding Festival 2022
June 3 pm - Inverhuron with Marshall
Byle
We met Marshall at the Visitor Centre after lunch for our trip to
Inverhuron Park. For once, the staging from the parking lot did
not work properly, as there were three groups all trying to
depart at the same time. But we finally got it sorted out and
drove over to Inverhuron. There was another delay at the park
gate but that got sorted too.
Marshall gave us some background about Bruce Nuclear Power owning
the property, finally reopening the park after decommissioning
the heavy water storage facility.
We had a very pleasant hike along the river trail. There was one
steep section where Marshall used a rope to help us down and
prevent falls.
Unfortunately, there were almost no birds. Near the start of the
trail, there was a Black-throated Green Warbler singing and
showing off. Later we saw a skulking American Redstart and a
Red-breasted Nuthatch near the cars.
On the way back to MacGregor, Bill suggested a stop near the
Tower, to try for Sora Rail. He had a little difficulty finding
the right access, but finally got there. A pair of Ospreys were
on a platform nest very close to the road.
Soon another car pulled up; it was Jean Iron. Together we looked
for a Sora, but instead we found a Virginia Rail right at our
feet!
Colin invited Jean to join us for supper at the Lord Elgin Fish
and Chips restaurant. Jean was staying at the same motel as us,
so we walked over together. We all enjoyed our fish dinner
together.
