Huron Fringe Birding Festival 2022

June 3 am - A Bird's Eye View with Jean Iron


Jean’s morning tour did not start until 7:15 am, so we got to sleep in! The event coordinator was Bruce Edmunds and driving the sweep vehicle were Cindy McGregor and Judy Duncan. These two are both excellent birders and a great complement to Jean, who is an OFO distinguished ornithologist.




Our first stop was at a beautiful farm property right on the Saugeen River at the dead-end on Sideroad 13/14. The owners, friends of Bruce, welcomed us onto their property which had many wonderful natural areas teeming with birds. Highlights were a pair of nesting Northern Flickers, a Red-bellied Woodpecker and Baltimore and Orchard Orioles.



It was hard to leave, but we continued along the river south, making several stops for birding. Highlights were a Yellow-billed Cuckoo and Ring-billed Gulls using the hard surface of the road to crack open crayfish they had caught.



At River Access Point 12, there was a colony of Cliff Swallows nesting under the bridge.



Before winding up, Bruce decided to take us back to Elsinore Road where we saw two Sandhill Cranes and a Green Heron.



We stopped on the reserve for “cheap” gas, then headed to the park for a BBQ lunch put on by the Friends of MacGregor Point PP.
