Huron Fringe 2019. June 3

HOMEWARD BOUND

June 3, 2019

We had a long drive to get home today, so we were up in good time. We had our breakfast - a White-throated Sparrow visited us. Barbara put some seeds on the table for the chickadees. We took down our tent and hung it up to dry – there was a lot of condensation. Then we birded around our beach for the last time.

A juvenile American Redstart came by along with our old friend, the Eastern Towhee.

We left the Park and drove southeast to Durham where we visited the cemetery where Barbara’s parents, brothers, grandparents and great-grandparents are buried.

We stopped for lunch at Springwater Park near Barrie, then drove through Orillia stopping for ice cream, of course at Kawartha Dairies.
We decided to try Carden for bird sightings again, approaching from the west this time. It was very breezy, so not the best for birding. In fact, we saw few birds beyond Tree Swallows and a single Eastern Bluebird. However, we did see two adult moose! And the beautiful Prairie Smoke was just coming into bloom. The huge puddles on Wylie Road had not diminished at all.

As soon as we turned off Wylie Road, the birding picked up. First, we saw a Wilson’s Snipe on a fence post, but it flew just as we were pressing our shutters. Then we saw a Ruffed Grouse cross the road and a distant Bobolink in a field. Grouse photos taken through the windshield.

We still had a long way to go; the drive was uneventful aside from a couple of construction delays. We enjoyed the northern scenery. And, in the early evening we pulled into our driveway.
