Cuba Birding Trip: January 9 - 22, 2013

Day 3 Friday, January11: Camagüey to Trinidad

Bird of the Day: Gundlach’s Hawk

casa particular in Trinidad

We enjoyed our early morning coffee with hot milk in our Camagüey casa. Soon we were in the rush hour traffic, heading out for a long drive to the beautiful historic city of Trinidad.

Amazing flowers stood out in contrast to the busy road traffic.

We drove through villages, followed by trucks doubling as busses (El Chino says these are dangerous and many people are killed in accidents each year), watched workers cut the grass at the sides of the roads with machetés and read slogans on roadside signs.

We stopped many times for birding - at rivers, fields, in forests and viewing overhead flights.

Can you find the juvenile green heron in this shot?

What is this little blue heron eating?

We had a picnic lunch at Sancti Spiritus.

After lunch we drove to Iznaga where we checked out a craft market.

Trinidad was founded in 1541. It is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Historic Trinidad is famous for its lovely, cobblestone streets, pastel coloured houses and beautiful plazas. We checked into our casa in Trinidad and headed out to explore a "revolution" museum with a stunning view from the roof.

Three girls from Argentina asked El Chino to take their photo.

Next we drove to a resort area and marina south of Trinidad. A Northern Mockingbird and several warblers greeted us. A rare Gundlach’s Hawk flew over. High fives all around!

A sunset ended our day and we headed back to Trinidad for dinner on our casa balcony. And a good night's rest.
