Churchill River Saskatchewan canoe trip: August 27, 2011
Day 7, Saturday, August 27
On his birthday, Bill was greeted by three Whiskey Jacks, also
known as Gray Jays at our campsite. As well, a Pine Warbler and
dozen Yellow-rumped Warblers arrived and sang to us.
Barbara picked a bag of luscious blueberries and cranberries
which Bill added to the birthday apple crisp he was making. Bill
was pleased to catch another fresh pike.
Near Stanley Mission, by the swift we spotted an eagle, a dark
warbler, a chickadee, a pair of Killdeers and a sparrow. Also,
Bill caught a nice walleye, which got off while he was trying to
net it.
We arrived back at Stanley Mission at noon, awaiting our pick up
by Craig and Pamela.
Final birds we sighted were four Baird's Sandpipers, a Raven and
Herring Gulls fighting over a fish.
We were entertained by a wedding party heading out in overloaded
motorboats for a wedding at the historic Anglican Church.
Our day concluded with the drive (gravel road) to Missinipe, a
visit to the Churchill River bridge which we had paddled under in
our 2007 trip, settling in at a cabin at Rics and a
birthday dinner at Thompsons Lodge. We finished our day
with birthday cake in a cup made by Craig in the cabin microwave,
served with ice cream.
