Churchill River Saskatchewan canoe trip: August 26, 2011
Day 6, Friday, August 26
Another sunny day with headwinds. We were now paddling against
the current and continued to fight headwinds. We planned one last
camp before returning to Stanley Mission on Saturday.
Crossing McMorris Bay, we were treated to flyovers by an eagle
and an osprey. In Purmal By we saw and photographed a Red-necked
Grebe.
At the swift, we ferried across to an eddy where a kingfisher and
eagle flew by. Bill caught a small walleye which he cleaned at
lunch time, on an island near Big Stanley Rapids. After lunch, we
hiked across the island to see a memorial plaque in honour of
flight lieutenant Drope from Regina (died in action, 1942).
Bill had one last chance to fish at the bottom of the Big Stanley
rapids. It was difficult to control the canoe in the strong
winds.
This time we had to use the rollers to get up Little Stanley
very tricky because of the current running over them.
Luckily we received assistance from a canoeing couple from
Regina.
We found the campsite we had spotted on our way down the river
and happily settled in for a good clean up before we reentered
civilization.
We began our dinner prep by soaking some dried peas (2 hours!).
Bill easily caught a large pike at our waterfront.
