China Birding Trip: September-16-30, 2013 |
Day 9 September 23 -
Birding in the Rain
Bird of the
day: Eurasian Woodcock
Early on this wet morning the keen birders donned their rain gear
and set out on the bus up to Old Peak. Although birds were scarce
this morning, the group enjoyed some tea served in tiny cups,
made by a Chinese photographer. He explained that the best
scenery photos are after a rain. He was patiently waiting for the
weather to improve.
Dave soon decided the birders would be more successful lower down
birding around the hotel. During the drive, we flushed a Eurasian
Woodcock at the side of the road. After a short warm up break
Bill made some coffee (Nescafe packets supplied by June)
with a thermos of hot water the rain gear group set out
again. We managed to see a couple of Chinese Nuthatches.
The German mountain bikers were out in the rain too.
We warmed up with a hot lunch and began the switchback trail
down. We stopped for a last chance at the Ibisbill, but no
sightings.
We bid farewell to the dramatic mountain scenery and checked back
in to the comfortable and warm Jin Shan hotel in
Beidaihe. Time to enjoy a hot shower and change for dinner.
