April 7. Prior to Tom’s birding tour, we had one whole day, meeting the group at 5:00 p.m. We thought about sightseeing in San Antonio, but decided, instead, to go to the coast to the Aransas National Wildlife Refuge, where the Whooping Cranes from Wood Buffalo National Park spend the winter. It was a hectic day, 3h of driving each way, with only a short time at Aransas. But it was worth it! We saw the Whoopers and plenty of other shore birds, too. The only regret was that we had to forgo many interesting trails and birding hotspots that were also there. Next time.
