April 21. This was our
reluctant departure day from Big Bend. There was still so much to
do. We planned to drive as far as Del Rio and take a motel.
However, we decided to get an early start, and hike the Lost Mine
Trail, as far as the overlook viewpoint.
We spotted a few nice birds, including some Spotted Towhees.
Still early, we drove on to Panther Junction for one last look
for a photo op of a Cactus Wren. No luck. But as we were pulling
out of the parking lot, Bill spotted something interesting next
door at the gas station. There was a puddle, probably from a car
washing, and a Pyrrhuloxia was having a bath. A very red House
Finch was perched nearby.
With still some time, we stopped at the Fossil Bone exhibit,
which was a bit disappointing.
We hit the road, thinking we could drive right through to Del
Rio. Wrong! We came upon a road race of Corvette and Mustangs at
Langtry. The road was blocked, so there was nothing much to do
but wait and enjoy the show.
We stopped for a fabulous view at a picnic shelter at the Pecos
River. Who would have thought there would be such a large river?
Keen-eyed Bill spotted a Yellow-headed Blackbird. We drove on to
Del Rio and took a motel with a pool. After a dip, we went to
Chilis for our last dinner.
The following morning, we returned the car and headed back to
Ottawa. We missed our connection in Chicago, but got out later,
minus our luggage, on Air Canada. Yea!
