Caye Caulker
March 29 - 30
The Gap like to give their
clients a variety of means of transport and, in particular,
travel as the locals travel. We left San Ignatio by local bus for
Belize City - a very crowded bus where our packs provided some of
the seating
Since we had ample time, we decided to get off and visit the zoo
for an hour before heading on to the water taxi terminal.
The trip to and from Caye Caulker by water taxi was windy and
wet.
"Are we having fun yet Gloria?"
Caye Caulker is a whole different world from inland Belize - this
is truly tourist, surf, snorkle and dive world
At the south end of the Caye, well away from the built up area,
you can invest in (somewhat wet) property. You're little piece of
heaven???
We joined Ragamuffin Tours to board Raga Gal, a 26' sailboat for
a sail out to the reef and some snorkelling as well as a sunset
cruise and cocktails. The snorkelling was good, although a little
adventuresome for some of us novices.
At the second stop, the guide stirred up some stingrays for us to
pet (those who wanted to that is).
Later they served conch ceviche and cocktails but as they had
forgotten the glasses we poured it into water bottles and shared
it around.
"Swill it down there Mike, and then pass it along!"
It turned cloudy and windy so no sunset, but Martin arranged for
a BBQ on the beach and we enjoyed a chocolate cake in honour of
young Barb's birthday
The next day we checked out the property for sale :) and did a
little birding.
That night we had our final supper together, and Lorna was
treated with a cake in celebration of her retirement.
In the morning, we had breakfast, and
after looking around a bit, caught the water taxi back to Belize
City. But not before Martin had an upsetting experience with a
beach chair!
