Alaska Cruise

We reach Alaska: Tracey Arm and Juneau
Day 3 May 16, 2014

When we woke up we were in Alaska. Our ship processed us through Customs and took on an American pilot overnight.

We welcomed a clear day. Bill spotted a whale spout with his binoculars. He whipped out his Nikon camera and got some good shots of a humpback’s tail. We also noticed some sparkly blue icebergs floating by.

Everyone came on deck as we sailed into Juneau.

Today we planned to hop on a bus in Juneau and travel to the magnificent Mendenhall Glacier. It was impressive with the bright sun shining down on it.

Bill was interested in finding some birds so we all hiked with him, finding the forest trail cool and peaceful.

Some girls on unicycles entertained us as we waited for our bus back to Juneau.

Back in Juneau, Rick and Cathy took the Mt. Roberts Tramway up the mountain for amazing views and a fish supper.

We headed for a local bar, Lucky Lady, for some welcome beer and wi-fi.

Bill’s special bird sightings today

1. Surf Scoter
2. Common Murre
3. Ring-necked Duck
4. Long-tailed Duck
5. Common Loon
6. Pacific Loon
7. Arctic Tern
8. Dark-eyed Junco (Oregon form)
