Local Pop sites for the Ottawa Region due in a few weeks
The Point of Presence sites in many parts of Canada including the Ottawa region (where I am) are not yet available. Until they are you need to make arrangements with a local ISP and they will connect you with the Web TV service in the States. I am successfully using IGS of Kanata as my ISP, though I had to upgrade to their 56KB line for them to support PAP. PAP and PPP protocols are required. No complaints; the 56KB gives me excellent performance and is only marginally (10%) more expensive.

You will pay your local ISP for their service, as well as Web TV who bill you by credit card. The monthly Web TV charge is however reduced from $19.95 US to $9.95 US after the first month if you are accessing via a local ISP. This is automatic; you don't have to arrange with Web TV. However, if during any month you make just one direct connect to Web TV, not only will you incur the long distance charge, you will go back to the $19.95 US fee for that month.

The instructions to get started are fairly well laid out in the information provided by FutureNet. The first stage is registering with Web TV, and this will take a long distance call from your box; hopefully your one and only. At one point you are asked for a ZIP. As an Ontario resident, use the code 10001 as shown.

The next step is to arrnage the connection with your local ISP.

Set Up menu
When you first set up the system, following the instructions carefully, there's a point where you are asked to press OPTION 3X and 217. There is a key "Options" on the keyboard. Press it, followed by 217. The lights will flash on the front of the Web TV even though it is switched off at that point. Then power up and the set-up menu will appear, allowing you to key in the username, password, and telephone number for your ISP.

Now you can connect, and prepare yourself for a pleasant surprize as the world of the Internet opens up before you.

Call Waiting
If you are using the system on your main or only phone line, use the options available on the Set-Up menu to arrnage either that the system freezes temporarily if an incoming call comes in, or that you block incoming calls.

Sound
Real Audio 1,2 and 3 are implemented, but not yet 4, so you can listen to some audio sites (in stereo) but not those with the highest quality audio.
Midi music quality is excellent.
