GCUC Time and Talent Charity Auction

The 1999 GCUC charity auction was held on Saturday October 23 in the church hall. Organizers Hal Adams and Tony Copple coordinated the event on behalf of the Kanata Stittsville Refugee Sponsorship Committee, representing five local churches. Gillian Mattock of St. Thomas's, Stittsville commissioned a set of individually drawn posters (now collector's items). Through publicity efforts in the churches we received about 80 lots to be offered, 35 being tangible items, and the rest a wide variety of talents.

We had fewer bidders than we would have liked, and at first we considered auctioning only the perishable food that had been specially baked, but, on a wing and a prayer we decided to read the list of lot numbers and ask for a show of hands for each, and include only those with more than one potential bidder. This left us 38 items. At about 3.00 pm, our auctioneer, Pat Smith (with Albert Gale Real Estate) got under way.

Pat Smith was marvellous. With a sharp humour and professional patter he racked up sale after sale at excellent prices, and he also entertained us in great style with stories that had is in fits of laughter. We thank him most sincerely for doing this for us and the refugees.

Every single item on the short list was sold. The final tally was the remarkable total of $2,235 after expenses ($30). Equally important, everybody had a good time and entered fully into the spirit, and generosity ran rife.

Thanks from Hal and Tony are particularly due to Julie Wilson, Janet Larocque and Barbara Reynolds, who handled the cash, to Deborah Cross who was a creative and enthusiastic driving force starting with her front page article in the recent church newsletter, to Faye Adams who organized coffee, and to Thomas Davies who carried all the items to the room front. We want to thank every one of those who contributed items and talents. To see what was sold, who bought your item, and what remains for a future silent auction at the Cookie Walk and craft fair on December 4, 9-12, please see the list. Most of all we want to thank the people who came and bid and bought. We commiserate with those who lost out in bidding contests and congratulate those who won. And we were very pleased to see there Nancy Boughner from the Kanata Kourier-Standard and Stittsville Signal, where you should look in Friday's paper (no guarantees!).
