Dear friends in Christ,

1a) Baffle: Concise Oxford Dictionary: foil, reduce to perplexity, bar progress of, <from obsolete French  "baffler" and modern French

"bafouer"": to hoodwink

1b) http://www.wordorigins.org/wordorh.htm

Hoodwink: Hoodwink has a rather straightforward etymology. It is simply a compounding of the words hood and wink. The hood is a covering for the head and the verb to wink means to shut one's eyes. So to hoodwink is to cover the eyes.

The verb, meaning to blindfold, dates to 1562. By 1610 the verb was being used figuratively, meaning to deceive.

(Source: Oxford English Dictionary, 2nd Edition)

1c) http://www.word-detective.com/current.html

To "hoodwink" in the 16th century was to blindfold with a hood (as in preparation for execution), a tactic also commonly used by thieves. The figurative use to mean "blind someone to the facts" first appeared in the 17th century.

1d) http://www.businessballs.com/clichesorigins.htm

hoodwink - deceive deliberately - the hoodwink word is first recorded in 1562 according to Chambers. It simply originates from the literal meaning and use to describe covering the eyes with a hood or blindfold. This was the original meaning. Today's metaphorical expression and meaning 'to deceive' developed in the early 17thC from the earlier use of the word to mean 'conceal' in the late 16thC.

1e) Hoodwink: as practiced in the 3rd Degree of Freemasonry when the Hood is placed over the candidate and he is knocked over http://www.thelodgeroom.com/dictionaryg.html

HOODWINK: Masonic Dictionary

"Hood" goes back to old German and Anglo Saxon, in which it referred to head covering, as in hat, hood, helmet, etc.; "wink," in the same languages, meant to close the eyes, "wench," "wince," etc., being similarly derived. A hoodwink was therefore a headdress designed to cover the eyes. The popular use of the word is believed to go back to the old sport of falconry, once so popular, in which the falcon had a hood over its eyes until ready to strike at its prey.

Grand Lodge of BC and Yukon

The Chamber of Reflection

Presented at the Vancouver Grand Masonic Day, October 16, 1999 by W. Bro. Helio L. Da Costa Jr. Albert G. Mackey in his Encyclopedia of Freemasonry explains that the Chamber of Reflection is:

...a small room adjoining the Lodge, in which, preparatory to initiation, the candidate is enclosed for the purpose of indulging in those serious meditations which its sombre appearance and the gloomy emblems with which it is furnished are calculated to produce. It is also used in some of the advanced degrees for a similar purpose.

This small room or chamber, which does not necessarily adjoins the Lodge room, is dark, with the walls painted black, or, as in one case I saw, imitating a rocky underground cave. It contains the following: a simple rough wooden table on which we find: a human skull, usually on two crossbones, a chunk of bread, a pitcher with water, a cup with salt, a cup with sulphur, a lighted candle or lantern, an hourglass, paper, ink and pen, a wooden stool or chair painted on the wall: a rooster, a sickle, the acronym V.IT.R.I.O.L.(U.M.) and various sayings. (...)He is also told that once the door is closed he should remove the hoodwink. Once our profane does that, he sees the chamber and the objects described earlier(...)

Bread is made of wheat, an element connected to the goddesses Isis and Demeter. Isis is the Egyptian mother goddess and also the goddess of the dead, again, two of the aspects of the Chamber of Reflection(...)

Faith, Worship and Ministry Committee (a Standing Committee of the ACC <Anglican Church of Canada>) at its recent meeting. It goes now as a recommendation to the governing body of the Canadian church - the Council of General Synod - that will meet in May to determine Canada's response to the Primates' communique.

"Motion FWM 03.05.#6

Moved by Patricia Bays

Seconded by Richard Leggett*

Passed Unanimously

That, while acknowledging the sincere concern of Anglicans throughout the world for the unity of the Communion and recognizing the pain of Anglicans of all persuasions caused by recent events, this Faith, Worship and Ministry Committee reluctantly but firmly recommends to the Council of General Synod the following resolution:

1. That the Council of General Synod confirm the membership of the Anglican Church of Canada in the Anglican Consultative Council with the expectation that the duly elected members attend and participate in the June 2005 meeting of the Council in the UK(...)

Explanatory Notes

Part 1 of the Motion

    * The Faith, Worship and Ministry Committee is concerned that existing ecclesiological and synodical structures, in dioceses and Provinces and within the Communion, are being pre-empted in their processes, and in the appropriate exercise of the checks and balances already available to them. Authority is being extended to bodies that goes beyond that constitutionally allocated to them. One principle of the evolution of church law is that we create new mechanisms only when all existing mechanisms have been exhausted.

    * In light of the above, we believe that the request to withdraw from the Anglican Consultative Council is an inappropriate action at this time for the following reasons:

o The Constitution of the Anglican Consultative Council states that the Anglican Church of Canada is a member of the Council, entitled to send three delegates to its meetings.

o Article 3.A of the Constitution of the Anglican Consultative Council clearly states that questions of membership are initiated by the Anglican Consultative Council.

o The roles of the Instruments of Unity as proposed by the Virginia and Windsor Reports have not been formally received by the Communion.

o The Primates' Statement of February 24 2005 contributes to further confusion regarding the interconnection of the Instruments of Unity.

o If the request issued by the Primates (Section 14 of the Primates' Statement of February 24) were to be honoured, it would set a precedent for dealing with other issues(...)

ACiC News Release:

History made in Canada by first ACiC Confirmation services

History was made last week when 102 people were confirmed by the Rt Revd TJ Johnston during the 450 strong ACiC Celebration at Richmond Emmanuel Church, British Columbia, Canada.

The Celebration came at the end of a week long visit by ACiC Bishop TJ and his wife Rees.  They traveled to meet with members of the 11 ACiC congregations visiting Vancouver Island, the Sunshine Coast and Greater Vancouver.

Three new Canadian deacons, who were recently ordained during the AMiA Winter Conference, were privileged to assist in the Eucharist held as part of the 18th annual Renewal Mission for St Simon's, North Vancouver

(ACiC)

Clergy and lay leaders from existing and potential ACiC congregations were able to join with us from all across Canada.

The ACiC is a year-old coalition of congregations throughout Canada formed as a result of the offer of Adequate Episcopal Oversight by five International Archbishops.  This offer continues to be extended to all faithful Anglicans across Canada who wish to get on with their lives and be free from the ongoing controversy plaguing the Anglican Church of Canada (ACC).

A small CD introducing the work of the ACiC is available free of charge and newly released DVD's of talks from +TJ sharing the Vision, passion and DNA of the ACiC are available on request.

The ACiC is committed to evangelism, church health and church planting and has grown from 5 to 11 congregations in its first year.  ACiC's prayerful goal is to double to 22 congregations during 2005.

The week long visit by +TJ and his wife Rees was a significant encouragement for beleaguered Canadian Anglicans.

The ACiC alongside the AMiA is committed to the 'common cause' partnerships with seven orthodox Anglican groups across North America.

David Virtue, March 16th 2005 Wednesday

(...)IN CANADA the actions of New Westminster Bishop Michael Ingham in his grab for four parishes has so angered the Rev. Barclay Mayo that he has threatened to call the police if a rival preacher shows up at (Christ the Redeemer) to take over the pulpit on the Sunshine Coast. Same-sex rites is dividing the Canadian Anglican Church like nothing else and the orthodox are gearing up for a big fight. Ingham has deposed four priests and wants their properties and the clergy out of the pulpits. Not on your life they are saying. They will fight the bishop all way to the high court; they will never give up a pew, stained glass window or chalice to this bully bishop....and they won't give up the gospel for Ingham's revisionist version either(...)

In the DIOCESE OF CONNECTICUT this week the leader of the "Connecticut Six" a group of orthodox priests who oppose their bishop Andrew Smith over the Robinson consecration and more, resigned, fed up with the whole stinking mess. The Rev. Mark Hansen of St. John's, Bristol, who faced having his parish and the others reduced to mission status because he and they will not fall into line with the bishop's understanding of DEPO, quit.

The bishop had issued an edict to the "Connecticut Six" and a deadline of February 15 to comply with his demands to accept his understanding of DEPO, pay their fair share to the diocese or face the music. The six had staved off the bishop till now, but the end seems to be in sight. Hansen announced he was getting out of the diocese and parish ministry, another victim of the ECUSA's contagious disease for self destruction.

In a letter he wrote: Dearest Family and Friends, "After much prayer and discussion, I have decided the time has come for us to move on from our work here in the vineyard of St. John's...the heresies of the 2003 General Convention happened, and I felt a call to stand up for the ultimate battle of Biblical truth; we stayed on. That staying on has cost us much in our personal lives, and that of the family. And so we believe the time has come and it can wait no longer. The timing of course, seems awful, with all the hopeful news from the Primates and seeming so close to the realization of that which we have been fighting for -- but there is no 'good' time to leave a parish."

Hansen will preach his last Sunday on April 10th, after which he will move full time into university work and writing. Bishop Smith wrote a letter to Hansen still talking as though DEPO was on the table; and stated flat out that after that he is expecting "resumption of pastoral oversight by the bishops of this diocese".

VirtueOnline will keep you abreast with what happens to the other five parishes, but there is probably no good ending to this story. The revisionist running dog bishops have the orthodox by the throat, and their one desire is to squeeze them out of existence

Just In: Nothing to Report in Diocese of Calgary

March 14th, 2005

(Toronto, ON) - Sam Carriere, director of communications for the Anglican Church of Canada called a press conference this morning at Church House in Toronto to announce there is nothing to report in the Anglican Diocese of Calgary.

...Barry Hollowell (inset) is still bishop and likely will be for years to come…in a diocese where nothing ever happens.

Senior church officials are smiling on this latest news from Calgary, where Barry Hollowell (inset) is still bishop and will be for years to come. The diocese, where nothing of note ever happens, including the resignation of a bishop, has been plagued in recent weeks with rumours of an uprising by the Anglican Church Women. A spokesman for the diocese attributes the rumours to the plethora of misinformation that is spread throughout the Communion each day by internet bloggers.

Margaret Casing, who appeared at the conference with New Westminster Chancellor George Cadman had this to say, "We regret that the actions of one lady has been allowed to influence the course of an entire press conference and will be taking all necessary precautions in the future - under the direction of Chancellor Cadman - to prevent this from happening, again…ever."

Cadman, the lazy-eyed chief legal officer of the diocese of New Westminster has recently been retained by the United Nations to bring peace and order to the governments of Australia and Switzerland.

Archbishop Won't Attend U.S.-Canadian Bishops Meeting 03/14/2005 The Archbishop of Canterbury will not attend a joint meeting of members of the U.S. and Canadian houses of bishops next month - a decision that is linked to the turmoil over homosexuality, according to the Primate of

Archbishop Hutchison also voiced his displeasure at Presiding Bishop Gregory Venables of the Southern Cone in the Journal article, saying the South American primate's visit to Vancouver Feb. 27 was a clear violation of the agreement hammered out between the primates. "To think that there's such a lack of good faith in this discussion is profoundly disturbing," he said.

Bishop Venables, however, told The Living Church the visit to the Diocese of New Westminster did not violate the terms of the primates' communiqué, which called for a moratorium on "new initiatives" only.

"The Canadian situation is not a new initiative since I have been working with them since last August when I was in Ottawa," he said. "We are firmly committed to continue working with the faithful groups in North America until this is resolved in a satisfactory way."

Archbishop Henry Orombi of Uganda agreed that the existing cross-border jurisdictions in the U.S. and Canada exercised by the provinces of South America, Rwanda, Southeast Asia, Nigeria, Central Africa, Kenya, and Uganda were regularized by the primates' communiqué and that there would be further consequences if the North American provinces failed to abide by all of the terms agreed to in the communiqué(...)

The Living Church Foundation: Latest News

Presiding Bishop: Primates "Out for Blood" at Meeting 03/15/2005 Presiding Bishop Frank T. Griswold identified by name six Episcopalians for having detrimentally influenced the course of the primates' meeting in remarks to the House of Bishops at their March 11-17 spring retreat at Camp Allen in Navasota, Texas.

The devil is a liar and the father of lies and the devil was certainly moving about Dromantine, the site of the primates' meeting in Northern Ireland, the presiding Bishop said, according to accounts from several bishops who spoke to THE LIVING CHURCH on the condition that their names not be revealed. The primates were "out for blood," Bishop Griswold told them.

The Rt. Rev. Robert Duncan, Bishop of Pittsburgh; the Rev. Canon Bill Atwood, general secretary of the Ekklesia Society; the Rev. Canon Martyn Minns, rector of Truro Parish, Fairfax, Va.; the Rev. Canon David Anderson, president of the American Anglican Council; the Rev. Canon Kendall Harmon, canon theologian of the Diocese of South Carolina; and Diane Knippers, president of the Institute for Religion and Democracy, were singled out for opprobrium by the Presiding Bishop for their behind-the-scenes roles at Dromantine.

Not present during the Presiding Bishop's remarks, Bishop Duncan was allowed a point of personal privilege at the evening session on March 13 to respond to the Presiding Bishop's charges. Bishop Duncan told the House of Bishops he had not manipulated the global south primates nor used nefarious means to influence their deliberations. After Bishop Duncan finished, the Bishop of New Hampshire, the Rt. Rev. V. Gene Robinson, rose and stated he did not believe Bishop Duncan, and repeated the charges of inappropriate meddling that had been leveled by the Presiding Bishop(...)

ECUSA COVENANT ACCELERATES DESTRUCTION OF ORTHODOX

One year moratorium on consecrations is no long term solution News Analysis By David W. Virtue

The Episcopal Church House of Bishops delayed an inevitable split between itself and the wider Anglican Communion this week by declaring a one-year moratorium on approving new bishops - straight or gay - in an effort to stave off its own banishment from the Anglican Communion.

The nation's Episcopal bishops declared in a hurriedly put together "Covenant" that this was being done as an "extraordinary action" to ease tensions in the worldwide Anglican Communion over the ordination of gay

bishops(...)

But a source told VirtueOnline that Presiding Bishop Frank Griswold totally undercut the "covenant" by saying that, "Of course, everyone will have to follow their own conscience regarding it."(...)

The HOB's covenant says that the Episcopal Church has never authorized same-sex liturgies, nor has General Convention requested the development of such rites. How disingenuous can you be? This has been going on privately in diocese after diocese for years with no revisionist bishop being chastised for doing so. There is nothing about stopping "private" same sex blessings in this covenant(...)

Any orthodox bishop who voted for this is either a fool (because he couldn't see what it did), or a coward (because he wanted an excuse not to cross lines)(...)

DEPO is clearly dead; it has not worked once in the Episcopal Church and the offer by the Archbishop of Canterbury at Dromantine to set up a commission to provide cover won't be acceptable either. It has no canonical teeth(...)

This covenant is both phony and dangerous. It is filled with a lot of high-sounding 'graciouspeak' language but its long term aim is corrosive and designed to wear down the remnant orthodox so people will grow tired thus depleting them of whatever resources they have left to fight the revisionist stream-roller(...)

The die has already been cast, all that remains is for the Primates to act and to declare themselves fully out of communion with the Episcopal Church USA and let it continue its gadarene slide into the abyss. END

Lutherans to vote on same-sex blessings

BY DIANA MAVUNDUSE

MARCH 15, 2005 -- Delegates to the Tenth Biennial National Convention of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Canada (ELCIC) to be held in Winnipeg, July 21-24, will be asked to vote on a three-part resolution that would allow local congregations to decide if they will authorize the blessing of same-sex relationships.

The National Church Council (NCC) of the ELCIC at its March 3-5 meeting in Winnipeg approved the three-part motion that will be placed before the National Convention when it meets in the summer, said Rev. Paul N. Johnson, assistant to the National Bishop(...)

The Primate of the Anglican Church of Canada, Archbishop Andrew Hutchison has been invited to attend the Lutheran National Convention as an ecumenical partner, said Archdeacon Paul Feheley, principal secretary to the Primate.

North American mainline churches have been faced with the same questions regarding the blessing of same-sex relationships, said Mr. Feheley. "The questions being raised by the Lutherans in regard to same sex-blessings, are similar to the kinds that we have been dealing with."

At its General Synod last June, Canadian Anglicans voted to defer a decision on whether same-sex relationships should be blessed in church until the next General Synod in 2007.

The full text of the resolution reads as follows:

RESOLUTION ON SAME SEX BLESSINGS

(...)That the ELCIC allow pastors to perform blessings for same sex couples who want to make a life-long commitment to one another in the presence of God and their community of faith. Authorization to perform such blessings shall require the consent of the pastor, the consent of the congregation or calling agency as expressed by a 2/3 majority vote at a duly called meeting, and consultation with the synodical bishop. These blessings shall use a rite authorized by this church.

That the ELCIC's Program Committee for Worship be requested to develop a provisional rite for the blessing of same sex couples in committed relationships. (...)There is a growing understanding in some contexts that the provision of same sex blessing is primarily an issue of pastoral care and not confessional integrity. The ELCIC needs to develop a pastoral practice to address the expressed needs of gay and lesbian people.

Calif. Ruling Sets Up Gay Marriage Fight

By LISA LEFF, Associated Press Writer

SAN FRANCISCO - A judge has opened the way for the nation's most populous state to follow Massachusetts in allowing same-sex couples to tie the knot, but both sides in the debate predicted a vigorous court fight first.

San Francisco County Superior Court Judge Richard Kramer ruled Monday that while withholding marriage licenses from gays and lesbians has been the status quo, it constitutes discrimination the state can no longer justify.

"The state's protracted denial of equal protection cannot be justified simply because such constitutional violation has become traditional," Kramer wrote. "Simply put, same-sex marriage cannot be prohibited solely because California has always done so before."

Ushering out a social norm long considered sacred won't happen right away, however. Kramer's decision is stayed automatically for 60 days to allow time for appeals, and conservative groups that oppose same-sex marriages vowed to uphold California's one woman-one man marriage

laws(...)
