No CTV Telephone Poll on Same-Sex Marriage

TORONTO, December 16, 2004 (LifeSiteNews.com) - A flurry of emails has been making the rounds throughout Canada the past few days about a supposed CTV television network telephone call-in poll on same-sex marriage. It appears that thousands of people may have called into the promoted number only to have voted NO to banning pit bulls, not same-sex marriage.

Even LifeSiteNews.com added the item to its NewsBytes section after receiving numerous emails from supporters advocating promotion of the poll which has turned out to be a December April Fool's joke.

An alert LifeSiteNews.com reader in Nova Scotia, wanting to find out how the poll was going, contacted CTV and was told that they were not conducting any such poll.

Further investigation by the LifeSiteNews.com reader revealed that the number being circulated was listed in a message on a site devoted to pit bulls which directed that calling the number indicated opposition to a ban on pit bulls.

See the site and the message titled "New Discussion: CP24 Poll: Do you support" about two-thirds of the way down the page at http://apbt.meetup.com/49/ Note from Ed+: Mea Culpa. The key in avoiding hoaxes is to make sure any notice is placed on a legitimate website.

ANGLICAN ESSENTIALS CANADA

FEDERATION COUNCIL

NEWSLETTER # 3

(...)The Diocese of Brandon (Manitoba) held their 42nd annual synod on October 14-16, 2004. Essentials Brandon took a prominent role throughout this synod. Prior to beginning the sessions Essentials invited all synod delegates (including the Bishop) and friends to a supper located at a nearby hall to both enjoy a warm meal and to have a period of prayer prior to the start of the session. Such an offer was seen as a challenge by our Bishop Njegovan,  who wrote each delegate in an attempt to dissuade their attendance " as they [Essentials] divide rather than bring about the unity for which Jesus prayed". " I cannot agree with the basic claims of the Essentials movement or their understanding of authority."  Despite this strongly worded note, 55 attended the supper. Clearly this was a harbinger of things to come. Later that evening, in the Bishop's charge, the attack continued. Almost a third of that direction dealt with the issue of the General Synod's motion A134 . In his rebuke of Essentials, the Bishop commented that, " the document known as the Montreal Declaration of Essentials is nothing more than the document of a group of like-minded people who gathered together and produced it. It is not the Doctrine of the Anglican Church of Canada or of the Anglican Communion...."

In response the synod delegates answered that criticism when dealing with Resolution 12. This motion, although watered down by the Resolutions Committee, was passed with an eighty (80)% percent majority. It read " Be it resolved that the 42nd Synod of the Diocese of Brandon send a memorial to General Synod expressing its dissatisfaction with the amendment to motion A134 passed at General Synod affirming the integrity and sanctity of same sex relationships, and respectfully request that General Synod reconsider this matter." Once again this was passed by a large majority of the delegates despite the Bishop prefacing the vote with the admonition that he would not necessarily concur with the forwarding of any such motion to General Synod.

Two positive outcomes occurred at this synod for the Essentials members, not including the resounding approval given to the above resolution. At the end of the synod, with the Brandon Sun reporters present, Bishop Njegovan consented to sending this resolution on to General Synod. Secondly, and more importantly, he also (after earlier writing reprimands to several clergy and forbidding their involvement in any Essentials Brandon organization) agreed to meet with the orthodox clergy (the large majority of all clergy in the diocese), something that he had refused to do over the preceding six months.(...)

Tory chief fires back at PM

Martin accuses Conservative leader of 'a lack of courage, a lack of leadership' Janice Tibbetts, CanWest News Service December 17, 2004 OTTAWA - Prime Minister Paul Martin and Conservative leader Stephen Harper denounced each other as cowards yesterday, heightening the debate over same-sex marriage and whether it is possible to prevent it from becoming the law of the land. The Prime Minister mounted an offensive by accusing the Opposition leader of failing to concede that the only way he could roll back gay marriage would be to use the notwithstanding clause of the Constitution. "I think that quite clearly, this is a lack of courage and a clear lack of leadership," Mr. Martin said after a cabinet meeting. "Mr. Harper has said he will change the law in the six provinces where the definition of marriage includes same-sex marriage and yet he refuses to say he would utilize the notwithstanding clause, which is the only vehicle open to him." By contrast, Mr. Martin said Alberta Premier Ralph Klein has been "intellectually honest" by conceding that the only way to stop gay marriage is to invoke the rarely used constitutional override, a built-in safety valve that allows governments to delay Charter of Rights and Freedoms court rulings for five years. Ottawa has never used the notwithstanding clause, as it is widely considered to be unacceptable for politicians to override Charter

protections(...)

Within minutes of Mr. Martin's rebuke yesterday, Mr. Harper shot back that the Prime Minister is hardly in a position to be calling anyone a coward. "In the past year, Mr. Martin has tried to hide behind the courts on the issue of marriage," Mr. Harper said in a statement. "The Supreme Court has refused to provide him cover." Mr. Harper was referring to the Martin Liberals sending their same-sex marriage bill to the Supreme Court of Canada to be checked for constitutional clearance instead of allowing parliamentarians to decide the matter. Mr. Harper also called on the Prime Minister to have the "courage" to allow a free vote on the issue within his party, so all Liberals, including Cabinet ministers, can vote with their conscience instead of along party lines. Mr. Martin has said his 38-member Cabinet must vote in favour of a bill that will be introduced when Parliament reconvenes in January(...)

Harper's same-sex plan lacks 'courage,' PM says

By BRIAN LAGHI AND KATHERINE HARDING

From Friday's Globe and Mail

    * So, where do we go from here? When it comes to same-sex marriage, Parliament has several paths it could take, says constitutional expert PETER HOGG. All but one lead to the same place. Paul Martin drove the wedge in further Thursday between Stephen Harper and Alberta Premier Ralph Klein, saying the federal Conservative Leader lacks the political guts to push through with his call for banning same-sex marriage.

Conservative Leader's Proposals to Protect Marriage Puzzles Canadian Conservatives

OTTAWA, December 16, 2004 (LifeSiteNews.com) - Conservative Leader Stephen Harper's press conference Tuesday outlining his three proposed amendments to the upcoming legislation on same-sex 'marriage' left Canada's social conservative groups scratching their heads.

The first proposal, to amend the legislation so that it "Recognizes the traditional definition of marriage, i.e. one man and one woman", was welcomed by conservative groups.

The second proposal has caused conservative groups considerable bewilderment and serious concern. The amendment, to ensure the government legislation "Protects the rights of non-traditional unions so that they are afforded the same benefits as married couples," has raised concerns that Canada's only Conservative Party is once again ignoring its large core constituency - supporters of the traditional family.

The third amendment, proposing to ensure that the legislation "Provides substantive protection for religious institutions to be free from performing gay marriages," is being seen as an inadequate offer to protect religious freedom on the issue.

Regarding the third item, Focus on the Family Canada senior policy analyst Anna Marie White told LifeSiteNews.com she was concerned that religious freedoms should be ensured for more than just religious institutions. She indicated the upcoming legislation should provide explicit protection from discrimination for all Canadians who object to same-sex 'marriage' for moral reasons. Canada Family Action Coalition Vice President Brian Rushfeldt concurred.

However, in an interview with LifeSiteNews.com, Conservative MP Jason Kenney explained that the party's proposals were not set in stone. The proposals are "objectives regarding the type of amendments we'd like to see". It's a statement of intent," said Kenney. "The important thing here is for the Conservative Party to use the bill to fight for religious freedom and to acknowledge the traditional definition of marriage," he added. Specific wording of the amendments will come after the bill is introduced and debated this Spring. Kenney suggested that Harper is keen to protect religious freedom.

Several conservative leaders were most concerned with Harper's second proposal. Focus on the Family's White agreed that doling out the benefits of marriage to other relationships would devalue marriage - the institution to which society looks for its future(...)

Klein turns up the heat in same-sex controversy

By KATHERINE HARDING

From Thursday's Globe and Mail

Edmonton - Alberta Premier Ralph Klein is emerging as the leading figure in the national battle against same-sex marriage, saying yesterday that he is disappointed with federal Conservative Leader Stephen Harper's efforts to marshal opposition.(...)

"I don't know where Stephen Harper is," he said when asked what the federal Opposition Leader was doing to block same-sex marriages. "I can't direct Mr. Harper to do anything, but it would be much more comforting to me and my caucus if he would say that they were going to propose amendments to allow same-sex unions only or to [support using] the notwithstanding clause.

"I don't know if he is going to do that."

Liberals in peril if PM pushes same-sex marriage: Klein

EDMONTON (CP) - Prime Minister Paul Martin will put his Liberal minority government in jeopardy if he passes a new law permitting same-sex marriages, Alberta Premier Ralph Klein said Wednesday.

Klein suggested the federal government could fall if the Liberals move on legislation that runs contrary to the views of Albertans and Canadians.

"I would think that would be at their political peril if they don't listen to the constituents of this country," he told reporters after meeting with his caucus on the issue(...) The Alberta premier said he plans to write all MPs urging them to vote against any new federal marriage bill that changes the traditional definition of marriage.

"I will be writing all MPs urging them to vote 'no' and if 'no' is out of the question then to vote to invoke the notwithstanding clause."

Klein noted the federal government could use the clause in the charter to prevent same-sex couples from marrying even after lower courts recognized the right.

By CAMPBELL CLARK

From Saturday's Globe and Mail

Justice Minister Irwin Cotler's assertion that civic officials will be able to opt out of performing same-sex marriage on religious grounds is being rebuffed in some provinces as jurisdictions across the country develop a patchwork of policies.

Manitoba Premier Gary Doer insisted that marriage commissioners in that province must still perform such ceremonies if they want to keep their licences.

The same policy is in effect in Saskatchewan.

But New Brunswick, one of only four provinces where same-sex marriage remains illegal, is preparing legislation to allow court clerks who perform civil marriages to opt out of performing same-sex ceremonies.

That has thrown a wrench into Mr. Cotler's assurances that disputes over the question can be resolved smoothly when he meets with provincial justice ministers in Ottawa on Jan. 5(...) Two marriage commissioners have quit over that rule, first expressed in instructions from the province's bureau of vital statistics in September, and have filed human-rights complaints. Saskatchewan has adopted the same policy, and officials there have given no indication that will change(...) British Columbia has instructed marriage commissioners that they can refuse to perform same-sex marriages as long as they refer couples to commissioners who will perform the ceremony. Twelve B.C. commissioners have quit, apparently because they were unwilling to make such referrals.

Why? It's the Family, Stupid

Much more than the right to marry is at stake if we redefine marriage. by Lorna Dueck

Justice Minister Irwin Cotler is a brave man.

Universal moral law is his battleground, and he's eager to defeat its boundaries with boldness and speed. If we follow him, we have begun the journey to any variety of marriage definitions in the country.

Scholars from across Canada wrote their views of caution on redefining marriage in the recent book Divorcing Marriage …

The Supreme Court has told Parliament it does have the exclusive right to change marriage from being defined as a union between a man and a woman. Religious freedoms to refuse performing same-sex unions will be protected, although recent legal history suggests they probably will be challenged, repeatedly. Thankfully, the Supreme Court decision has given Parliament the opportunity to bring the issue to Canadian democracy and, already, many groups are calling for a national referendum on the issue.

Some are cheering the news, yet millions of Canadians have heard the court's decision, and Mr. Cotler's determination to proceed with legislation, with sadness, worry, even fear. The Christian Coalition, The Canada Family Action Coalition, Focus on the Family, Evangelical Fellowship of Canada are just a few of the voices that are urging voters to launch writing and telephone campaigns and to call for a referendum. With Gallup showing that church attendance in Canada is the highest in 30 years, Ottawa should take note-political activism in church life is also growing.

What seems to be lost in public language, however, is how to discuss why moral views run so deeply on this issue.

Ironically, the court itself addressed it when it referred to the living tree that is our law.

There is much more at stake than just the right to marry. Some of the objections to the morality of redefining marriage are because of the enormous puzzle it presents to our social fabric. Do children have the right to know their biological origins or do we create a new type of Canadian who has to be content with being a product of donation into a fertility pool? As kids grow, these things matter to them. No doubt, well-meaning adults will re-inform them that their innate drive to know and identify with their roots can be adapted by two loving adults of the same sex.

That's just one of the questions social scientists have raised as they warn that we vastly underestimate the fragility of culture-building that will be shaken by this marital change. Scholars from across Canada wrote their views of caution on redefining marriage in the recent book Divorcing Marriage, edited by Daniel Cere of the Institute for the Study of Marriage, Law and Culture and Doug Farrow of McGill University. They argue that redefining marriage is about to become a "hastily conceived social experiment that will undermine human rights, deflecting marriage from the support of children to the mere affirmation of sexual commitment between adults."(...) Supreme bafflegab on same-sex 'marriage'

Barry Cooper

ONLY a lawyer inured to the realities of common sense, or a sophist with progressivist tendencies, could swallow whole-hog the musings of the Supreme Court of Canada on same-sex marriage.

What the court has done exceeds greatly the legal issues involved. It can be put into sharp relief if you ask yourself this question: Why would anyone wish to destroy the institution of marriage? All the chatter about the Charter is designed to obscure that basic question and the common-sensical realities that lie behind it.

The reference to the Supreme Court was initiated by the Liberals solely to prevent its discussion during the election campaign last spring. The prime minister did not want same-sex "marriage" to be discussed, but never explained why. By manipulating the court to do their dirty work, the Liberals initiated a series of cunning and deceptive moves(...)

LIBERAL MPS FIGHT TO SAVE MARRIAGE

A small group of Liberal MPs is lobbying hard to defeat pending government legislation to allow same-sex couples across the country to marry, the Hill Times reported Monday(...)

The Ottawa Citizen reported Monday that about 30 members of the Liberal caucus are known to oppose redefining marriage(...)

"The next step for us now," adds Anna Marie White, Focus on the Family Canada's Director of Family Policy, "is to inform and motivate Canadians to get them working for marriage. We have a chance to win this vote if people act now."

WHAT NOW FOR MARRIAGE?

(...)We know from ample social science evidence that traditional marriage is very good for society. http://www.fotf.ca/familyfacts/issues/marriage/analysis.html

(...)Call your MPs constituency office and request a meeting to discuss your concerns with marriage. http://www.fotf.ca/familyfacts/takeaction/activism101/contactofficials_constituency.htm

Take your spouse, friends or some neighbours with you so it is clear you represent a community of opinion and not just your own. Take time to get to know your MP and respectfully express your belief that traditional marriage needs to be protected. Our website, www.familyfacts.ca has an abundance of information- social science evidence, ethical arguments, and academic research- supporting marriage that you can take along with you to share with your MP.

Remember the importance of speaking clearly and use words that are respectful and fit a secular context. Outside of church circles, words like 'sacred', 'moral', 'sinful' and 'sanctity' tend not to effectively communicate the need to defend marriage.

Also contact- call, write, email, fax- the Justice Minister http://www.fotf.ca/familyfacts/takeaction/activism101/contactofficials_cabinet.html

and Prime Minister http://www.fotf.ca/familyfacts/takeaction/activism101/contactofficials_cabinet.html

to let them know that you support the traditional definition of marriage and request that they do everything possible to ensure marriage is protected in Canada. Tell your friends to do the same. Ask your pastor for five minutes in a Sunday morning service to inform your church family of what they can do to help marriage. Write a letter to your local paper in support of traditional marriage. http://www.fotf.ca/familyfacts/takeaction/activism101/lettereditor.html

When it is published, photocopy it and send a copy to every MP in

Ottawa- the postage is free! You don't even need an address. Simply write the MPs name on the envelope front and write "House of Commons, Ottawa" underneath and it will get there.

This is an issue that cuts across all political party boundaries and there are members of the Conservatives, Liberals and NDP that support traditional marriage. If we can successfully inform and motivate others to defend marriage, we stand a very good chance of protecting traditional marriage when it comes to a vote in Parliament. We just might win this one!(...)

US Church shrinking

The American Church has suffered its largest decline in attendance at its services for decades, new figures have revealed.

The Church's Office for Congregational Development reported that last year, the number of churchgoers fell by 23,623 (three per cent) to 823,017, which is double the rate of decline of the previous year. The record decline coincides with ECUSA's decision to consecrate Canon Gene Robinson as the Anglican Church's first practising gay bishop.

It is a loss equivalent to the size of four dioceses, as the median Average Sunday Attendance of the American Church's domestic dioceses in 2003 was 6161(...)

One of the dioceses hardest hit by declining numbers in 2003 was New

Hampshire(...)
