VOLUNTEERS PREPARE FOR FOUR DAYS OF 'PLANNED SPONTANEITY'

By DONNA CASEY -- Ottawa Sun

More than 3,000 volunteers are pumped and ready to work for Billy Graham.
The volunteers packed the Corel Centre last night to prepare for their jobs as counsellors at this weekend's Billy Graham Mission.
Clutching information packages and sporting new name tags, more than 3,000 people got some final tips on their four-night task: approaching one of the thousands of mission-goers who are expected to answer Graham's altar call at the end of each service.
"None of us have done this before ... We're following the method that's tried and true and following the instructions of Billy Graham's team," said Rev. Doug Ward, chairman of the mission's counselling committee.
Ward expects the first night of the mission to be full of kinks that will be ironed out during the following nights of song and praise.
"This is an exercise in planned spontaneity," said Ward.
Last night Ward told mission volunteers they should relax and know that behind the scenes, Ottawa's crusade is in the capable hands of Graham's seasoned planning team.
"I ask you one simple thing. Whatever they ask you to do, do it," said Ward.
Counselling supervisors met in small groups before the rehearsal, praying for a successful mission and good health for the 79-year-old Graham.
