Tips on hiring a snow removal contractor
You might consider asking the following questions when choosing a contractor:
1. Does the company have insurance? (General liability insurance specifically covering snow removal operations.)
2. Is the organization registered with the Better Business Bureau?
3. Is the company licensed by the City of Ottawa? The City of Ottawa requires licensing to protect residents from fraud, ensure safe snow clearing activities, and to enforce by-laws.
4. Does the company have solid references in your area?
5. Do they only plow your driveway, or do they also remove the snow from sidewalks, stairways and up to the porch?
6. When will they come when it snows? Do they complete the removal within so many hours of the storm? This is important if you need to get to work.
7. How much snow must fall before they come? Be sure it is in the agreement that they come based on a certain amount of snow.
8. Do they return after the snowplow has been by?
9. Do they install snow poles or snow staking along the driveway. This is important to keep equipment out of the landscaping and to help
identify the perimeter of an area.
Get quotes from a few contractors. But remember the cheapest quote may not always be the best one.
