With the beginning of the 1996 boating season Environment Canada NO LONGER distributes marine forecasts for recreational boaters via Weather Radio, standard telephone service, or the Internet/WWW.  This includes marine forecasts for the Ottawa River and the "near shore forecasts" for the Great Lakes.  Boaters are expected to pay for such forecasts by dialing a 1-900 phone number (1-900-565-5000 in Ottawa).

Predicted wind speed and direction are key components of these marine forecasts, and are therefore no longer freely available to recreational boaters. It should be noted, however, that marine forecasts are still freely available to commercial shipping on the St-Lawrence, and that regular weather forecasts will mention wind conditions if they are expected to be especially strong within a 12 hour period.

Despite this situation, Ottawa area sailors can avoid the fees and still get an idea of what to expect in terms of wind conditions by checking out the marine forecast for commercial shipping on the St-Lawrence River or the agricultural forecast for western Quebec. The links listed above may be of help to sailors trying to gain a complete picture of the expected weather conditions for the Ottawa River.
