HAYATE'S NETHACK MEMOIRS
======================== PART 2: EARLY GAME

Upon arrival, I found myself a mere Evoker. My weapon was a +1 quarterstaff, and instead of the Tome of the Night Sky, I have a spellbook of sleep... well, that should help with running the other way. I had a potion of confusion (not so useful) and some water (potentially useful). Rings of increase accuracy and increase damage (both potentially useful). A wand of light (that's not helpful at all right now). As far as scrolls go, there was one of create monster... as well as IDENTIFY scrolls. Good, I like identify.

My cloak of magic resistance was an opera cloak, which I also liked, because it most resembles what I normally wear. (You know, the white jacket with the long, darker wrap around my legs! *smile* Shows off my legs a bit.) So, here we go... I fix up my hair (need to find a hat), dub my kitten Rein, and explore. As usual, we plunged down until we found the Oracle level; in fact, I think I may have accidentally overshot it, and located Sokoban (the boulder puzzles leading up). I mean, the Oracle turned up early, on DL5, with the up and down stairs on the same side of the level. Who knew? Either way, there were no food problems, thankfully.

Shockingly, there was even an ALIGNED ALTAR on level 1, not far from the starting room! With any luck, I figured this would help me avenge the deaths of Nanoha and Fate. *smile* Other discoveries were Adjama's General Store on level 2, and Kabalebo's General Store on level 4 - except he was closed for inventory. Mines entry was also on level 4. The first level of the Mines was lit; so was the next; so was the next (yes, this wand of light is SO USEFUL, hmph), and no town yet either, this is troubling. At least Rein was having fun killing gnomes.

Minetown was DL8 - ooh, Kanturk has a SPELLBOOK SHOP. All is forgiven (even if I can't afford them yet). Unfortunately, the altar is neutral, with the priest of Thoth hanging around. No need for Izchak's lighting yet (obviously), so leave him (and Djasinga's delicatessen, and Cire Htims' home appliances). Managed to snare a bag of tricks along the way though, so back to my altar on DL1 for a bunch of #offering dead things.

Nothing. C'mon, I'm expecting the artifact Magicbane! I've already switched to daggers as my weapon of choice, not even #enhancing the skill slots for my quarterstaff! (Wanted to save my slots for spells or Gifts!) Oh well, time to search deeper... Sokoban had been solved by this point, giving me a handy Amulet of Reflection. I don't need to worry about wands anymore.

Annootok's General Store on level 8 has a Giant Mimic (yes, I have floating eye telepathy by this point, likely poison resistance too). We'll call the mimic Yikes and move on. Aklavik's General Store on level 11. So many stores! This will all be very useful when I have more money, though some stuff like armor I do buy. Of course, from the early mines I already DO have armor like elven mail and boots and such. Heck, I wouldn't be on level 11 without it! But of course it affects my ability to cast spells. *sad face*

DL12 is where it all falls apart. It's a BIG ROOM, full of monsters. (It's also my Quest Portal level!) Okay, retreat. Time to finish off the mines, or something. Been doing some price IDing as I go; cheap spellbooks I try reading (the expensive ones I save - no point knowing a spell if I can't cast it). Learn "confuse monster"; eh. Learn "knock"; already have a key, thanks. (Used it to get into the store on DL4.) Price some scrolls, we'll call this one Lights. The only level of the Mines which is actually dark though is DL10 (out of 12, and the lower level is the vampire maze version).

Back on level 1, I finally bless some of that starting water, then bless my ID scrolls, and I ID a number of things - this includes a spellbook of levitation and... hey now! A spellbook of magic missile! (It's pink, how cute!) It's Magic Misteltein time! (Now, I don't "cheat" much, but from the internet, I know that's my special spell!) I also have a ring of teleport control (it's shiny!) from Sokoban, and a wand of teleport. (Don't remember how I snared it with charges remaining, maybe from Sokoban too. It was my sixth IDed wand - which reminds me, both me and Rein have Speed from a wand now too.)

So, time to take on that Big Room.
