PART 10: INTO THE SANCTUM

Above are my stats before entering the Wizard's portal; already picked up the other things I'd need from Vlad's. On my way up to the Wizard's Tower, I see a magic trap I'd previously discovered in his zoo. Pause. Should I? Well... every little bit of energy helps, if I want to properly avenge Nanoha and Fate. I dance around on the trap, hoping for more energy. One thing that appears is a cockatrice, and it leaves a corpse.
Hm, that's bad, I've heard of soldiers wielding those, and it'd really spoil my day. Oh, wait... I know there's no pits in these nearby squares (except that one in the corner). *I* wield it instead! Continue to dance on the trap, and start making statues. Another cockatrice appears; it leaves another corpse.
....
Well, I'm kinda committed now. Chuck that corpse out in the corridor, keep dancing. Boom! Finally, I'm now at Power level 376. Throw away the corpse, continue my way up. Kill another cockatrice in my way. *roll eyes* Enter the Wizard's tower on the left... all the bad things I cleared out last night (Run away! Run away!), except this black dragon, which I polish off now. Deep breath.
Ring of levitation over water, zap dig at tower, zap finger of death, down go the Wizard and his hound! Kill the vampire, grab the Book of the Dead (zap identify on it, what the hell) then get my two cursed scrolls of teleportation, teleport to where? Level 52. *whew!* I'm breathing hard.
I go to the Vibrating Square (remember the worm tooth?) and perform the ritual with my bell, candelabrum and the book. I can now enter the sanctum. (I have no freaking clue how you'd know to do that stuff without the internet, by the way.) It's dark down here, but the magic lamp I've been using all game provides more than enough light. I'll just leave these unique items by the stairs...

Damn, the Wizard's back early. Doesn't bode well. However, I simply peer at him with my bright blue eyes, dramatically level my charmed Magicbane at him (picture it with a cross on the end, like my old staff!), whip open the Book of the Dead, and, in my shimmering robe, cast finger of death on him. ZOT! I am alone again. The magic Velka triangle spins lazily beneath me. *quiet smile*
Now then, start searching the sanctum; find some random useless stuff. The graveyard still seems to be sleeping though, that's unusual from past experience (Sesshomaru and Miaka). ... Well, magic Misteltein sure woke them up! Fight, kill, stab, etc. For some reason, there are a lot of (like, three) Valkyrie corpses named Carrie in here. That's kinda funny.
Tourist corpse named Candi. Valkyrie named Miaka? The game's messing with me... the only Miaka who was ever in the dungeon ascended. And... aw!!! *sniffle* A Wizard corpse named Fate. That's just... SAD! And me without a wand of undead turning. *pout* For some reason, I find this incredibly unfair. Rest in peace, Fate-chan... the next person to come down here, bring a wand of undead turning.
Anyway, stow my rings and wands in my oilskin sack and check out the chests. One makes me hallucinate, otherwise they're clean. A few potentially useful things, like a potion of gain energy, which I stick in my bag of holding to ID later. Next, the inner sanctum!
Make my way through the tight passage. Actually shoot off a death ray or two to get in; some priest has summoned insects, lovely. Hm, this (now) dead priest had a piece of cloth - must be cloak of protection, that's the only cloak I never found. Make a full tour of the area, more interested in loot than killing things. Scroll of light, well, that could brighten the place up.
Everything goes dark! *smack forehead* That was (obviously) a cursed scroll. The unicorn horn isn't helping me. Come on, Hayate, get it together now, you (were) using a magic lamp, plus you know the light spell! Zap some Magic Misteltein at the priests until I can see again. There. Okay. Smarten up.
Surprisingly quickly, everything around here has been more or less disposed of. Now have to find my way into the altar area through these fire traps... I start on the right and go clockwise. Naturally, the door is on the top upper right corner (next to the giant mimic pretending to be a boulder). *roll eyes* Enter. Moloch's priest is ticked off, and there's a barbed devil or something in here too. We start trading zaps.
Moloch shoots down a lightning blast, hitting us! I seem to recall something like this from previous players. However, it happens *twice more* and a wand of digging which I picked up outside explodes. I'm starting to fear for my rings. Is it because I'm spellcasting instead of using melee?? Finally, the high priest is down, I grab the Amulet of Yendor (name it MINE) and run outside. A bit wigged out, I use my ID spell out here, rather than drop stuff on the altar. ID the cloak of protection that way too.
So, didn't lose my rings, and have The Amulet. Time to escape.
